Motorola Droid 2 Global gets an alpha taste of Ice Cream Sandwich via CM9

Owners of the Motorola DROID 2 Global got a nice surprise this Christmas in the form of an early CM9 port, thanks to XDA Member ngocha2006. For those unaware, CM9 is the upcoming release from the CyanogenMod team, based on Ice Cream Sandwich (aka Android 4.0.3).

Keep in mind, this is an unofficial port, which has been built using the CM source — not officially released or endorsed by the CM crew. That being said, this looks to be a rather stellar build for a first release. As you can imagine, there are bugs that need attention before this will qualify as a daily driver, but a handful of features already work if you’d like to give them a try. Here’s the rundown:

Here’s what works:
Phone GSM\CDMA
Wi-Fi
SMS
Audio
Sensors
SDCard
EGL
GPS
Bluetooth
HW 2d And 3D
USB
Charging

And here’s what’s still in need of fixing:
Camera
Download Market
Talk
Data phone (I don’t have the test)
Possibly more……………………..

I’d expect to see items from the “does not work” list get fixed in the near future. The Android development community has never disappointed, and I’m sure they won’t start any time soon. If you want to give this ROM a try, make a backup and head over to ngocha2006′s thread for the download link and instructions. Then be sure to let us know how tasty that Ice Cream Sandwich is once you’ve got it running. Enjoy!
