Bluegrass Cellular starts rolling out 4G LTE network with a bit of help from Verizon
LTE. LTE. More LTE. That’s what’s currently roaming the minds of wireless carriers in the US of A, and while Verizon, AT&T and Sprint are at the forefront of it all, smaller networks are also looking to get a piece of the “real 4G” pie. The latest one to flip its own Long Term Evolution switch is Bluegrass Cellular, which was accomplished in large part thanks to Verizon’s LTE in Rural America program, and is a culmination of an agreement inked back in 2010 between the two telcos. With the initial rollout phase, Bluegrass Cellular’s expected to cover more than 348,000 folks in cities such as Bowling Green, Glasgow, Radcliff, Bardstown and Elizabethtown, offering subscribers in these areas speeds of around 12Mbps down and 5Mbps up. Naturally, Bluegrass plans on bringing LTE to more of its covered markets, with the outfit noting that it “will continue to expand 4G LTE to additional areas in 2013.”

Samsung Galaxy S2 now available from Bluegrass Cellular

Despite the fact Samsung has rolled out the Samsung Galaxy S3, the Samsung Galaxy S2 is still making its way into new markets. Rural carrier Bluegrass Cellular has now added the device to their lineup for $110 with a new two-year contract. No doubt, it's a little on the higher end of pricing for the carrier but it's also one of the better devices offered.
One stand out item though is that they list the device as coming with Android 2.3 Gingerbread and no mention of Android 4.0. As we know it, Galaxy S2 variations have been getting updated to ICS for a while now but there's no telling if the update will be waiting for you as soon as you open the box or if you'll be waiting for Bluegrass Cellular to push it out.

Samsung Admire for Bluegrass Cellular
If you are not into major American carriers, there is always a possibility to turn to your local, regional carrier and get an interesting offer from it. So, Bluegrass Cellular has started offering the Samsung Admire, another middle range smart-phone in its line. You won’t find anything special in this device but its price – $49.99 on a 2-year contract bases. But, there is a bit better option – you can grab the device mentioned for $213 without any contract obligations. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? For the price mentioned you will get a 3.5-inch TFT touch-screen display at 320 x 480 resolution capacity (it looks great on a 3.0-3.2 displays but 3.5-inch touch-screen deserves a lot better attitude), a 800 MHz processor, a 3.2 MP rear camera, GPS connectivity, Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity and microSD card support for up to 32 GB of storage. Also, it will be running Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system.
Bluegrass Cellular gets the Samsung Admire
On Bluegrass Cellular? Want the Samsung Admire? It can now be yours for the low, low price of $49.99, if you're willing to go in for a two-year contract. But for our money, we'd do the $213, no-contract deal. And for that you get mid-level 3.5-inch device. Could certainly do worse.

Samsung Gem on U.S. Cellular Hands-On and Unboxing
We’ve been talking about this phone for months and months and yes, months, I kid you not. The Samsung Gem has news spanning back to August 4, 2010 and it’s got regular updates all the way up to the present where it’s available on U.S. Cellular for basically free ($29.99 after $80 mail-in rebate and 2-year contract.) At one point we saw it on Bluegrass, another time we had it coming out with Verizon, once it even cost $200! Crazy time! Now we’ve got it in our hands and it is truly, yes truly, a little gem.

First Impressions
This phone looks utterly unique. It features a large diamond-shaped home button on the front, an upside-down triangle for an ear-level speaker, and another diamond on the back to cover up the camera hole. The front also features several more physical buttons including call, hang up, menu, and back, and there’s everyone’s favorite on the right side – a physical camera button! It’s all plastic chassis, a tiny 3.2-inch screen above. Rounded on the top and bottom, flat along the sides and top, and a nice maroon/red battery cover back “with Google.”

This is going to be a hot contender for those looking to get into Android without a lot of initial cost and an ever-so-slightly unique looking handset. We’ve got a hunch that it’ll be lasting long with the 1500 mAh battery, it weighs essentially nothing, and the last time we were looking at a U.S. Cellular phone, the data did not drop once, not even in the deep woods of Northern Minnesota.

So we’ve got high hopes.

Verizon-branded Samsung Gem pictures surface
We first saw pics of a Verizon-branded Samsung Gem (OK, of a dummy unit) back in February, but today new pictures, including what looks like retail packaging, have surfaced. Alltel, U.S. Cellular, and Bluegrass Cellular already offer the Gem, which is a mid-range device sporting a 3.2-inch WQVGA display, an 800 MHz CPU and Android 2.2, so this one isn’t an exclusive. The good news is that we’re pretty sure it won’t be Binged, and for those interested it should be available soon from Big Red. When and if Verizon has anything official to say, we’ll let you know.
