Nokia Xpress browser released for Lumia Windows Phones

Nokia has been exclusively using Windows Phone as an operating system for its smartphone offerings for quite some time now. We all know that the Finnish mobile major has been going through a financial nightmare lately, but it is doing all that it can do to stay afloat. Nokia sold off its patent rights to another organization in order to raise some money and stopped its development on Maemo in an effort to concentrate all the development capabilities it has on Windows Phone. Nokia has been releasing few apps for Windows Phone such as Camera Extras, Creative Studio, and Nokia City Lens Beta. These apps definitely add value to Lumia range of Windows Phone devices and make them stand out of the crowd of Windows Phone devices from other manufacturers.

Windows Phone 7.5 is a great operating system, but there’s a lack of certain features which other smartphone platforms including iOS and Android have. It’s good that Nokia doesn’t wait for Microsoft to add features to its mobile operating system and instead takes matters into its own hands by developing themselves. Nokia is still selling Windows Phone 7.5 devices, so there’s no reason as to why they have to stop their development effort on it. Nokia has gone ahead and released another app which is a data-savvy Xpress browser for its Lumia Windows Phone smartphones. Nokia Xpress browser is an interesting app to talk about. According to Nokia, the all new browser can save up to 90% of user’s data usage and this is achieved by using data compression algorithms similar to the one implemented in Opera Mini.

Apart from reducing the data consumption, the app also aims to save some battery life which should be helpful for heavy users. The Nokia Xpress browser is not a traditional web browser per se. It allows you to search and browse existing web content in a unique format which highlights the images and the text. Apart from supporting browsing the web, it is also a RSS reader which offers magazine style display of feeds. If the user comes across a page which supports RSS, the RSS feature of the browser will automatally ask if s/he want to add the page to built in feed reader.

Below is a summary of various features of Nokia Xpress browser:
• Detailed report on the amount of data that you consumed on the browser. Can be saved as a live tile for quick view.
• Save sites with RSS feeds in the browser and then view the articles in a magazine style layout.
• Save pages for offline viewing
• Save a video on SkyDrive and watch it later
• Tap on a word on a page and do a quick search on Wikipedia, Bing and YouTube
• Translate a page to one of the 10 language options available

Currently, Nokia Xpress browser can be only downloaded from Nokia Beta Labs. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think this app will actually be helpful in saving data usage? Let us know in the comment section below.

Apple’s iPhone 5 will arrive with a free Lightning to 30-pin adapter (update: Apple officially says no it won’t)

iPhone

If you were miffed at having to pay $29 to adapt your existing iPhone accessories to the iPhone 5‘s newfangled Lightning connector, fear not: Apple will throw in the first adapter, gratis. Extras will still run the aforementioned sum, which Cupertino has justified by saying the units will include chips to enable features like analog and USB audio along with syncing and charging. There’s also a $39 cable version available, but neither format will let you output HDMI or VGA video — there’s more (as yet unpriced) adapters coming for that.

Update: Well, the plot thickens. We’re now hearing reports that the above wording is a mistake, and that the adapter isn’t included after all. The information comes via a reader of The Next Web, who advises Apple sales support informed them it was an error. Of course, we’re reaching out to get the final word on the matter. However, that won’t be much consolation to those who made a purchase based on incorrect info.

Update 2: The above wording is now nowhere to be found on Apple’s site, suggesting that it was indeed an error. We’ll keep you posted if we hear anything more.

Update 3: Well, we’ve just received word from Apple confirming that the iPhone 5 will not ship with a 30-pin to Lightning adapter, which is a bit of a bummer. But, it does come with a Lightning to USB adapter, so if your current accessories have a USB port, all hope is not lost. Sadly, the specific iPod out functionality found in BMWs and Minis is not supported. The full comment is below.

The Lightning to 30-pin adapter does not come in the box with iPhone 5. It is sold separately. However, the Lightning to USB cable does come with iPhone 5 for connection to AC chargers and other devices… The Lightning to 30 Pin adapter supports analog audio output, USB audio, as well as syncing and charging. Lightning to VGA and Lightning to HDMI cables will be available in the coming months.

Student Edition Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 to hit Best Buy Aug. 19th, same price tag but with two Extras

The middle of August means a lot for a lot of people. For those of you who are kids, have kids or are in college, it means the end of summer is fast approaching. Soon it will be back to your usual routine, usual studies and long nights prepping papers. Whether you are in high school or college, a usable product for getting things done is always a must. An Android tablet can easily help you get the most out of your school days and nights with minimal efforts. Keeping the cost down isn’t always that easy though. While the ASUS Transformer line is probably the best choice with the dock, that can set a person back quite few handfuls of cash. If you are looking for something a little less expensive, then you might think the Nexus 7 is you best bet. But what about a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0?

Seems Best Buy is about to start stocking shelves with a new bundle box for the back to school shoppers. Offering up the 7-inch, 8GB Wi-Fi only tablet with a bonus keyboard dock and USB connector accessory. You would be sacrificing Jelly Bean and the kick butt Tegra 3 processor, but you would be gaining that USB accessory, Keyboard dock and of course a memory card slot. For some it is a no brainer, for others it complicated comparison and debate. The new bundle deal is supposed to hit shelves on August 19th and be offered up for the same price as the Tab 2 7.0 by itself, that is it will be $249 for the package deal.

Which way are you leaning or which direction do you suggest.

Nokia’s Contact Share app for Lumia devices

Nokia is keen on releasing new apps for their Windows Phone 7 based Lumia line up. Few days ago, Nokia released Nokia Camera Extras, an app that would add features to existing camera app on Nokia Lumia 710 and Lumia 800. Windows Phone 7 operating system has a very basic camera app, and Nokia Camera Extras aims at bringing the features such as action shots, panorama shots and smart group shots so that phone’s capability is in par with iOS and Android counterparts.

Nokia’s moves do make sense as they won’t be choosing Android as an operating system for their devices and since Maemo is gone, they are totally relying on Windows Phone 7 and the upcoming Windows Phone 8 as an OS for their high end devices. Nokia had previously promised that they would be releasing plenty of softwares for their Lumia line up of Windows Phone 7 and after Nokia Camera Extras, they have come up with Contacts Share app.

Contacts Share is just “fill what’s missing in Windows Phone” app from the Finnish mobile giant and should be very helpful for corporate users. The apps which Nokia is launching bring features to the Windows Phone 7 operating system that a buyer would take for granted when it comes to a smartphone device. Contacts Share basically allows the user to send contact info via email or SMS to any phone including Symbian, Android, iOS and BlackBerry in a standard Vcard format.

Once a contact is received, it is either imported by email or when the Contacts Share app is opened, the contacts appear in People Hub just like any other contact would do. As of now, the app isn’t working on Lumia 900 for AT&T and gives an error that the OS version is not up to date. It was later confirmed for AT&T users that the app is dependent on yet to come firmware update, which may be the upcoming Tango update.

The app description also notes that the app won’t be compatible with CDMA. That doesn’t mean Nokia has stopped supporting CDMA phones and won’t be seeing day of light on Sprint or Verizon. The app is actually based off the SIM card and requires SIM card to be present in the slot.
Windows Phone 8 will definitely have these features natively. Nokia shipped 10.9 million of its Lumia line of phones in the three quarters since it debuted. It has even beaten Apple’s iPhone in terms of post launch sales, where in which iPhone sales reveal that they shipped only 5.4 million units in the first three quarters post launch. Since there are lot of Lumia’s already in the market, and keeping in mind the fact that Windows Phone 7 devices won’t be upgraded to Windows Phone 8, these updates do make sense and Nokia should keep them coming. What are your thoughts on Nokia’s moves? Is it doing justice to its users by bringing in features that should have been present natively? Share your thoughts using the comment form below.

Nokia Camera Extras for Windows Phone 7 now available

Nokia Lumia’s default camera app is pretty basic and low on features. If you are unsatisfied with the default camera app, fear not because Nokia has started rolling out Nokia Camera Extras on a global scale. The app basically adds various features to the camera found on Windows Phone models. Once Nokia Camera Extras is installed, you can see various additional features using which you can click action shots, panorama shots and smart group shots. The app also brings self timer, a pretty basic feature that is missing in Windows Mobile 7. When you buy a smartphone, you take these features for granted, but Microsoft doesn’t care and it is good to know that Nokia does.

Readers from Belgium and France have already been able to get their hands on this app. To check the availability of Nokia Camera Extras in your country, you can check the Windows Phone Marketplace or the Nokia Collection.

A lot of features that are added by Nokia Camera Extras are already available in stock camera apps of Android and iOS phones. We expect these features, and even more advanced, to make its appearance in stock camera app of Windows Phone 8 models. The panorama shot option lets you click many pictures and stich them together in order to get a single wide picture. The smart group shot selects faces automatically, thus helping to get the best group shot. The Action Shot mode enables the phone to click rapid shots and the self timer of course does what it should.

The app has been released for Nokia Lumia 710 and Nokia Lumia 800, as those camera features are already available by default on low end Lumia handset, the Nokia Lumia 610, and high end Lumia handset, the Nokia Lumia 900. For those having Lumia 710 and 800 and crazy about clicking snaps, this app is a must have for you folks. This app will at least bring your phone’s capability in par with your friend’s iOS and Android phones.

Jailbreak iOS 6 beta 3 with redsn0w

Apple recently released iOS 6 beta 3 for developers and redsn0w has already been updated to version 0.9.13 dev 3. If you happen to be a jailbreak developer, you can jailbreak Apple’s latest version of operating system so that you can test your jailbreak apps for compatibility.

Let’s see how to go about jailbreaking iOS 6 beta 3 using redsn0w, however, users should make a note that redsn0w version 0.9.13 dev 3 is a developer version and shall not be confused with general public release, and hence you may encounter certain bugs and unstability besides, this release will just jailbreak and not install Cydia, but users requiring Cydia can install it later. If you aren’t a developer and don’t know what you are doing, it is suggested that don’t proceed with the jailbreak.

1. Download redsn0w 0.9.13 dev 3 files from here.
2. Save the iOS 6 beta 3 firmware file (IPSW) from Apple’s developer portal and place it in some easily accessible folder.

3. Place your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch on DFU mode. In order to put your device on DFU mode, scroll down to find the instructions.

4. Once the device is on DFU mode, launch redsn0w on your PC and click Extras
5. Press the button which reads Select IPSW, after which you have to navigate to the location where IPSW for iOS 6 beta 3 is saved.
6. Once you have selected the location of IPSW file of iOS 6 beta 3, click the button which reads “Jailbreak” on main screen of redsn0w.
7. You have to make sure that “Install SSH” option is checked before continuing.

Putting apple device on DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode is very different from placing it on Recovery Mode. While being a bit tricky, it requires a while to get there.

• Connect iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad into your Mac or Windows PC using the USB cable while making sure that iTunes is running on the computer.
• Now you are required to press the sleep button (can be found on top of the device) and home button (the only button on front) simultaneously.
• Both the buttons should be held down simultaneously for about 10 seconds. If you see an Apple logo on screen, it means you haven’t done it right and you need to give it another shot.
• Now you have to let go the sleep button and just keep pressing the Home button for another 5 seconds. At this stage, if you see “Plus into iTunes” screen, you have done it wrong and you have to try it again.
• In case the screen stays dark, you have successfully put your device on DFU mode. Cheers.
Since putting the device on DFU mode is a bit tricky, you should not be afraid to give try again and again until you get it right.

The jailbreak as of now is tethered and requires you to connect your jailbroken apple device running iOS 6 beta 3 to computer running redsn0w in order to boot your device. To perform a tethered boot, follow the steps below:
1. Place your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch on DFU mode using the procedure mentioned above.
2. From the main screen of redsn0w, go to Extras and press the “Select IPSW” button in order to navigate to location where IPSW file of iOS 6 beta 3 is located.
3. Once the IPSW file is selected, go to the main screen under extras and press the button which reads Just Boot in order to make a tethered boot.

Your device will reboot after a while and then you should be good to go. Again, redsn0w version 0.9.13 dev 3 is just a beta version of redsn0w released for developers and is as prone to bugs as much as the iOS 6 itself in its current shape. You can expect crashes and is only recommended for developers.

Nokia Lumia 800 and 710 get Windows Phone 7.5 update, finally get to Tango (updated)

Nokia Lumia 800 and 710 updated to Windows Phone 75, finally get to Tango

We’d heard that the Lumia 800 and 710 were to get Windows Phone 7.5 sometime soon, but the time has officially arrived for these two to Tango. Today Nokia announced that the fresh code has already started rolling out, bringing hotspot and flip-to-silence functionality to the handsets. Plus, once you’ve updated via your Zune desktop software, access to the nifty Camera Extras software — already promised to Lumia 900 owners — is but a download away. As a refresher, those Extras allow Lumias to take Scalado-powered Smart Group Shots, provide a better burst mode for action pics, plus add a self-timer and panorama mode as well. Want to see the new camera features in action before taking the plunge? Check out the video after the break.

Update: As our astute commenters have pointed out, the Lumias both have Mango onboard, so this bit of software is but an update to Windows Phone 7.5 that brings additional features.

Nokia Camera Extras released in US and China

The Nokia Lumia series of smart phones has really made a place for themselves in the smart phone market. They also have the credit of being the most successful Windows Phone 7 smart phones of all the available models from different manufacturers. So obviously, Nokia is very happy with this, and wants to make its customers happier by giving out new features of these smart phones. But how will the company put new features to the smart phones which have already been sold? Well, in the form of software updates or giving away apps for free on the Windows Phone Market Place of course.

Well, the Finnish smart phone manufacturer had announced that it would give some really cool features to the camera app on its Lumia series of smart phones, which were missing till now. And the company had said that it will be releasing it by next week. And yes, it will be coming next week. But the Nokia Lumia 900 users in the United States and China are a bit luckier than the rest of the customers worldwide, this is because the company has released the Nokia Camera Extras app already in these regions.

The Nokia Camera Extras is the app you are looking for if you want new features on your Nokia Lumia device. The app gives a range of new features such as:

  • Smart Group Shot: Capture great group shots in just one attempt by choosing the best faces from a burst
  • Action Shot: Capture fast-moving action shots with just one click and significantly improved shooting speed
  • Panorama: This new control feature makes it easy to capture beautiful panorama shots by finding the image in the sequence
  • Self-timer: Set up your Lumia on a stand and get yourself into more photos

Yes, that is so much tempting. And if you are in the US or in China and if you have a Lumia 900, you can download Cameras Extras right now from the Market Place. And if you do not have a Lumia 900 or if you don’t live in the US or China, don’t worry, the company will be releasing the app for all smart phones globally by next month. So you will just have to wait a bit longer.

The Engadget interview: Nokia’s Kevin Shields talks Windows Phone 8 (video)

The Engadget interview Nokia's Kevin Shields talks WIndows Phone 8

Today at the Windows Phone Developer Summit, we had the opportunity to sit down with Kevin Shields, SVP of Program and Product Management at Nokia, and chat about the day’s announcements including Windows Phone 8. Our discussion started with the apps Nokia unveiled today — PlayTo for DLNA support, Nokia Counter to monitor data usage, My Commute for personalized routing, an update of Nokia Music to 3.0 and the Camera Extras imaging suite — which are rolling out next week for all Lumia handsets running Windows Phone 7.5. Kevin gave us a little more insight on Camera Extras, a set of four apps (Self Timer, Panorama Maker, Action Shot and Smart Group Shot) designed to enhance the camera experience which leverage technology from Nokia’s recent Scalado acquisition.

We then moved on to discussing Windows Phone 8 and specifically NFC support, with a small tangent spent on Kevin showing us the recently launched Lumia 610 NFC. The next topic was about what we can expect from Nokia in terms of hardware for upcoming phones running the latest iteration of Microsoft’s mobile OS. We know that the first batch of Windows Phone 8 devices will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 Plus dual-core SoC, but on the topic of quad-core processors Kevin said “where additional hardware makes a difference, then sure, let’s talk about it,” adding “we’re going to stay committed to the experience.” Finally we discussed the future of Nokia’s PureView technology and how it fits in with the next generation mobile OS. PureView “is a core technology that we are dedicated to and invested in” said Kevin. Sounds quite promising, right?

We can’t wait to see what the next wave of Lumia handsets brings to the table. Until then, go ahead and watch our video interview.

Amazon Kindle Fire Receives Update

Amazon Kindle Fire is one of the most popular tablets in the USA and is more than just well known worldwide. It is affordable, it sports pretty great specs, runs Android which means – it can be rooted and so on and so on. Until this day the Amazon Fire was running Amazon Kindle Fire version 6.2.2 but right now it gets updated to version 6.3 and here’s what you need to know about the renewed software:

Sharing: Customers will be able to easily share favorite passages and notes from their books directly from Kindle Fire, without even leaving the book. Customers simply highlight a passage and select “Share” or choose the “Share” option from the toolbar within a book, write a note if they choose, and select which social network to share with. Passages or notes a customer chooses to share will be displayed to other Kindle readers viewing the same book, and customers can also choose to share via Facebook and Twitter. Amazon already has a vibrant community of readers who choose to share favorite passages and notes from their reading through Kindle.amazon.com. This update brings these notes and highlights to Kindle Fire, so a reader can easily see what other readers are saying about their books.

Book Extras: Powered by Shelfari, Amazon’s community of book lovers, Book Extras make it easy for customers to see supplemental material about the book they are reading, without even leaving the book. Customers can view descriptions of characters, a glossary of common terms used in the book, information on the authors and common locations referenced in the book, and more. To view Book Extras from within a book, customers simply tap the top of the screen to bring up the toolbar, tap the menu button and select “Book Extras.”

Archive of Personal Documents: Customers’ personal documents will be stored in the Amazon Cloud and available for re-download at any time from the Documents tab on Kindle Fire. Just as with Kindle books, Whispersync will automatically sync notes, highlights and last page read for personal documents.

Print Replica Textbooks: Students can buy thousands of print replica textbooks to read on their Kindle Fire and save up to 60% off the list price of the print textbook. Print replica textbooks maintain the rich formatting, color and layout of the print editions, with features including notes and highlights, zoom and pan, linked table of contents, real page numbers and whispersync of notes, highlights and last page read.

Reading View for Amazon Silk: There is a seemingly endless array of interesting and engaging content available on the Internet. Sometimes, unfortunately, that business article, blog post, or sports recap you clicked on is surrounded by a host of competing material. With Reading View on Silk, the content that you’re interested in is elevated above the clutter. When invoked by the customer, Silk will load the body of the page in a reading-optimized, single screen view (even for multi-page articles). The full page is still available in the background, allowing the reader to easily toggle back to a traditional view to see other interesting features on the page.

Movie Rentals: The rental period for movie rentals that are downloaded to Kindle Fire now starts when a customer starts watching the movie, rather than when a customer starts downloading the movie.

Additional Enhancements: This update will also bring some of the features customers have requested, including faster re-connect of Wi-Fi after Kindle Fire has been asleep, and general performance enhancements.

Amazon Kindle Fire 6.3 Update Coming, Root Already Achieved

The Amazon Kindle Fire is receiving an upgrade to firmware 6.3 tonight. Before we go any further, let me just inform you that the upgrade has already been rooted. You can find more details on that in this XDA thread. That said, this new update does break the previous root method and the following changes have been made:

  • Sharing: Customers will be able to easily share favorite passages and notes from their books directly from Kindle Fire, without even leaving the book.
  • Book Extras: Powered by Shelfari, Amazon’s community of book lovers, Book Extras make it easy for customers to see supplemental material about the book they are reading, without even leaving the book. Customers can view descriptions of characters, a glossary of common terms used in the book, information on the authors and common locations referenced in the book, and more. To view Book Extras from within a book, customers simply tap the top of the screen to bring up the toolbar, tap the menu button and select “Book Extras.”
  • Archive of Personal Documents: Customers’ personal documents will be stored in the Amazon Cloud and available for re-download at any time from the Documents tab on Kindle Fire. Just as with Kindle books, Whispersync will automatically sync notes, highlights and last page read for personal documents.
  • Print Replica Textbooks: Students can buy thousands of print replica textbooks to read on their Kindle Fire and save up to 60% off the list price of the print textbook. Print replica textbooks maintain the rich formatting, color and layout of the print editions, with features including notes and highlights, zoom and pan, linked table of contents, real page numbers and whispersync of notes, highlights and last page read.
  • Reading View for Amazon Silk: There is a seemingly endless array of interesting and engaging content available on the Internet.
  • Additional Enhancements: This update will also bring some of the features customers have requested, including faster re-connect of Wi-Fi after Kindle Fire has been asleep, and general performance enhancements.

The update isn’t quite available yet but you can download it from Amazon’s servers before they’re ready to push it out to everyone. Be sure to install it in the “Update Your Kindle” menu under settings. [via LiliPuting]

YouTube adds Disney, Pixar, and DreamWorks rentals

Disney, Pixar, and DreamWorks

Google has been working hard to gather more media content these days and now, coming shortly after their Google Music announcement comes the news they've fleshed out a deal with Disney, Pixar and DreamWorks Studios to bring much of their content to YouTube.

Fans of animated movies? We’ve got the beloved animated classic, Alice in Wonderland and the newly envisioned Winnie the Pooh. Love Disney·Pixar? We have hits like Cars and Cars 2 all in one place. Up for a little bit of adventure? We’ll take you from the darkest depths of the oceans with all four of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, including the most recent blockbuster in the franchise Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Aside from just bringing the content in, Google will be working with the studios to offer YouTube Movie Extras with behind-the-scenes clips, interviews, and other exclusive content. The rentals are live on YouTube right now some you can likely pick up for $.99.

– Size is only 143MB!!!
– Based on ARHD 4.1.7 by mike1986. (used with his permission)

Then Microsoft’s now got you covered with a fairly extensive overview of its new Games Hub, which has actually been tweaked a bit further from earlier previews it’s offered. The Hub also boasts a new Collection view that promises to let you more easily manage your installed Windows Phone games, and it’s literally been brightened up a bit across the board. Check out the gallery below for a closer look, and hit the source link for some more details.
