Happy New Year from Android Community!

We wanted to take a quick moment and drop a hello to everyone this fine Tuesday afternoon. This Tuesday being the first of many fun Android days of 2013. It’s all over folks! 2012 is all over. We hope all of our friends, readers, and partners had an excellent, safe, and fun filled New Years Eve this year.

12 - 1

Happy New Year!!!! Android in 2013 will be extremely exciting. We’ve been taking the past few days to reflect on Android as a whole over the past year. That goes from smartphones, tablets, apps, rumors, predictions and everything else in between. While I’m sure many of you are nursing hangovers, cleaning up party favors, or hanging out with friends and family enjoying a nice lunch we wanted to ring in the new year with a few quick posts.

As mentioned above, we’ve taken the past few days to look back at everything 2012 had to offer in the world of Android. So here we wanted to share in one post a few of our round-ups for you all to enjoy. We’ll start with our Android in 2013: Expectations and Predictions. It’s a good read where we wrap up 2012 and discuss many of the things we’re hoping for, and expecting to see from Google and everyone else next year. Then we took a moment to reflect on Android the OS, and where it’s headed as 2013 hits full stride.

In 2012 we had over 80 Android device reviews, almost 100 hands-on videos, and plenty of app reviews in between. For a quick look at tons of links, coverage, and our wrap up check out our Android Community Reviews Rundown for 2012. We also focused on Android apps and took a look at the state of Android apps in 2012. Then last but not least, we couldn’t think of a better way to ring in the new year then to wrap up some of the top game changing Android devices of the year. We hope you enjoyed our coverage from 2012 and look forward to serving you here again throughout 2013.

The Android Community team will be enjoying the rest of the day to spend with our friends and family, and we hope you all do the same. Don’t worry though. We’ll be back strong tomorrow as we get ready for CES 2013 taking off starting Sunday. Get excited!

Android: A Look Back To 2012, And A Look Forward To 2013

android-a-look-back-to-2011-and-a-look-forward-to-2012Happy New Year! It’s that time again; with the new year comes our new annual prediction post. I tackled this last year, and rather than do a bunch of crazy, pulled-from-thin-air predictions, I ended up with a link-filled research-fest for the year. It worked out pretty well, so that’s what’s on the docket for today. First though, I’ll take a look and see just how many of last year’s predictions and rumors came true, and provide some updates for the more important topics.

A Look Back To 2012

What a crazy year. 2012 brought us two versions of Jelly Bean: 4.1 and 4.2.  We saw a complete transformation of Google Search with the Knowledge Graph, Google Now, voice output, and Google Goggles integration.

Android Community Weekly: End of 2012 Edition

Welcome to the latest round of the Android Community Weekly. The last edition ever… in 2012. This was an amazing year for the Android world at large, the Android community, and us here at Android Community. We’ll be bringing plenty of stories wrapping up the year tomorrow, but for now lets rundown everything that happened this holiday weekend in the news.

acweekly

We want to start by thanking everyone that made this year awesome, and possible. From the manufacturers, the PR companies, the wireless carriers, and of course you — the readers! Then by saying Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year — Ya filthy animal (name the movie). We hope everyone has a wonderful and safe New Years Eve. Now lets talk Android. This week was exciting for many Motorola owners, gamers, and Samsung Galaxy Note users. We’ll start with the OUYA, their developer kit game console shipped this week, and we’re expecting great things from OUYA in 2013.

ouya_dev-580x382-540x355

Motorola and Verizon issued the update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for their highly popular original DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX, which made tons of people happy, and reports surfaced of a RAZR M HD for early next year. That was an awesome budget phone and a 4.5-inch variant would be a hot seller. Speaking of the M, we reviewed the Motorola Electrify M for US Cellular, so check that out by clicking here.

Samsung as usual had a fun week. We’ll try to keep their news to a minimum since it comes in bunches, but we saw some interesting Galaxy S IV stuff — albeit fake. A concept video based off of early design drafts was leaked, and looks rather interesting for the 4.99-inch 1080p quad-core superphone. We can’t wait to see it next year around March or April. Then Samsung confirmed the original Galaxy Note will receive Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and multi-window updates soon.

Speed round. Google Music received music scan and match features, but was cutting out explicit songs and naughty words, and here’s a fix for that. Hyundai wants to replace our car keys with NFC smartphones, and an impressive new 3rd party keyboard called the Kii Keyboard was released — and is rather nice. Last but not least Huawei’s 6.1-inch 1080p Ascend Mate leaked a few times, and we’ll be seeing more of that flagship next week for CES.

Have a Happy New Year!!! Then stay tuned because starting next Sunday CES 2013 will be in full stride with plenty of Android news.

Jelly Bean Rolling Out To The Toshiba Excite 10

7048473035_c91b75cea6_o

Hot on the heels of the Jelly Bean update for the Excite 7.7, Toshiba is also pushing the OTA to its larger brother, the Excite 10. Reports are scattered and details are pretty scant at the moment, but we have confirmed that it’s rolling out now.

It appears that the OTA – which brings Android 4.1.1 – is being pushed in stages to both the AT300 and AT305. You can see if it’s available on your device by heading into Settings > About Tablet > System Updates or by jumping directly into Toshiba’s Service Station.

Happy Pulling!

Thanks, Tiffany!

Verizon Galaxy S III Jelly Bean source released by Samsung

Samsung Galaxy S IIIHappy day after Christmas everyone. Hopefully your holiday was filled with good times, laughter and plenty of new gadgetry for your hands. The next week or so will be fairly slow in the way of new stuff and announcements. There are sure to be a few good press releases and things coming soon with CES just around the corner. Until all the insanity gets into full swing, we will do what we can to keep you informed of anything that might be of interest.

One little nugget that was discovered this morning was a new entry at the Samsung Open Source Center. They have just released the open source code for the recently released Jelly Bean software for the Samsung Galaxy S III on Verizon. That is sure to make some developers wish their festivities last night were slightly less adventurous.

If you want to get you hands on it you know what to do. Head over to the Samsung Open Source Center and get to downloading.

Merry Christmas from Android Community!

We hope this morning you find yourself surrounded with friends and family, loads of gifts, and of course boxes with neat little ribbons and bows on top. It’s Christmas! From all of us here at Android Community to all of our dearest loyal readers, Merry Merry Christmas everyone! Happy Hanukkah! And anything else you’re celebrating this wonderful day.

android-snowman-5

If you’re one of those Christmas and birthday on the same week people (like my brother) enjoy getting the same amount of gifts that count as birthday presents too — you earned it. As mentioned yesterday, the entire Android Community crew will be taking a break from the world of smartphones, tablets, and Android today to focus on our friends and family for the holidays.

If you just got a new tablet for x-mas check out these tablet apps, as well as a nice selection of apps for a new smartphone. Sadly I’m already doing tech support duty, so be warned when you give your old paps a shiny new smartphone with more features than his car. We’ll be back at it tomorrow morning as usual, accelerating into New Years eve, and the new year to see what Android and Google brings our way.

We have tons to look forward to in the next few months here at Android Community, especially early next year. As you all know we have CES 2013 in early January where we’ll be seeing copious amounts of quad-core 1080p HD smartphones, tablets, and more. Android will continue to grow and expand as the most dominate mobile OS in the world, and we’ll be here each and every step of the way. Make a few Skype or Google+ hangout calls to friends and family, and enjoy the rest of the holidays. We’ve had a pretty amazing year, and we’d like to thank you – the readers, the manufacturers, the PR teams, and the advertisers – for helping make it all possible.

Thanks, and Merry Christmas!

SwiftKey Sends Out Holiday Email, Hints At Big Things in 2013 For The Predictive Virtual Keyboard

swiftkey

SwiftKey sent out a Happy Holidays email today notifying their beta subscribers that SwiftKey was 50% off. Not only did that mention that, but the company also hinted that the they were working with “big companies” to bring the keyboard to new device owners straight out of the box. They didn’t mention much more than this, but I almost wonder if SwiftKey will soon begin replacing Swype and becoming more widespread than it already is? There isn’t a whole lot to speculate here aside from who they could be working with. I highly doubt it would be Samsung though, as they have their own type of a predictive keyboard. Granted, I could be totally wrong on that.

It will be interesting to see what SwiftKey has in store for its customers in 2013, as they mentioned that “we’re working on some exciting new product areas that we’ll reveal throughout 2013.”

Personally, I can’t wait to see if SwiftKey will actually become a virtual keyboard installed on new devices straight out of the box.

Google’s Android team wishes everyone a Happy Holiday with this magical video

Sure I am a fan of Google and Android, but putting that aside, Google puts together some of the best promo videos. Today’s Happy Holidays video from team Android is another one to throw into the mix. This one is set at Google headquarters during a holiday party when one employee notices a lonely bugdroid. He sets up various Nexus devices around him showing a Christmas tree, a snowfall, and a fireplace, along with a little holiday music. All of this sets the stage for a magical ending. Hit the break to see it for yourself.

Google Offers Some Android-Centric Holiday Cheer With ‘Happy Holidays’ Video, Digital Cards

image

If you aren’t quite feeling the holiday spirit yet, Google has decided to lend a hand with a few holiday-oriented offerings focused on our favorite green robot.

The official Nexus page on Google+ shared a few “Happy Holiday Cards” this evening, depicting Bugdroid hanging out with some arctic pals sitting by a fire, having a party, ice skating, and – of course – playing with Android-powered phones and tablets. To download the full-resolution cards or share with friends, just click through to the original post, linked below.

Google also published a video titled “Happy Holidays from Android” which shows how a few tablets can brighten even the loneliest robot’s holiday.

Android team says Happy Holidays in touching video

We’ve been seeing plenty of companies releasing holiday-themed videos lately, including one particularly unsettling commercial from the likes of Samsung. Today it’s the Android team’s turn to show off a holiday video of their own, and rest assured, there isn’t any uncomfortable innuendo between Santa and Mrs. Claus to be found. Instead, the holiday video the Android team put out is rather touching, and may even make you shed a tear if you aren’t careful.

androidholiday

The video is set in Google‘s offices during the Android team’s holiday party. Everyone is having a good time, save for one lonely Bugdroid, dressed in his holiday finest and staring longingly at a tiny Christmas tree set up in the office. When one Android developer notices the Bugdroid, he surrounds the lil’ guy with a winter wonderland using various Nexus devices, bringing a smile to his green (and adorable) face.

It’s a touching video that has an even more heartwarming ending which we won’t spoil here, but it also shows off a couple of items that are currently unavailable for purchase: docks for the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10. Perhaps the Android team decided to roll a teaser into this holiday video and we can expect an announcement shortly? One can only hope.

In the meantime, we suppose we’ll just have to settle with watching the video. Google has put out some pretty excellent videos in the past, and this one is no different. 2012 was a pretty great year for Android, so we’re definitely looking forward to what 2013 has in store. What did you think of the video?

Google not-so-subtly reveals Nexus 10 dock in holiday video

Nexus 10 dock

That "Happy Holidays from Android" video was adorable, wasn't it? Well if you weren't taken back by the Android meeting up with all of his bugdroid friends for a holiday get-together, you may have noticed a Nexus 10 being put in a dock on a desk. Alongside a Nexus 4 and a couple of Nexus 7's, the biggest Nexus was dropped right into this dock you see above to show off a Photo Sphere.

The Nexus 7 dock has come up for pre-order through 3rd party retailers in the last couple days. Your guess is as good as ours when the Nexus 10 dock could make an official retail appearance.

Grab another look at the video after the break. The Nexus 10 fun starts around 1:00 in, and you can see it again at 1:14.

Thanks, rfmike!

Google’s Android Team spreads the holiday cheer with Nexus devices [VIDEO]

We’ve been getting plenty of videos lately showing off Google’s lineup of Nexus devices, but the latest may be our favorite yet. Less of a commercial than a digital greeting card, the short spot tells the story of a lonely Android yearning for a bit of holiday cheer. Thanks to the Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Nexus 10, and the help of a few Googlers he got just what he wished for (look closely and you can even spot unreleased docks for the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10) .

Cutesy? Yes. Cool, nevertheless? Absolutely. We especially dig the stop motion animation. Kind of makes us wish for a full-length holiday spectacular in the style of Rankin/Bass and starring Bugdroid. We can certainly wish, right? Happy Holidays back at ya, Google!
