[Interview] Koushik "Koush" Dutta On Leaving Cyanogen, Inc. And His Return To ClockworkMod

duttaKoushik Dutta, better known as “Koush” to the Android power user community, was one of the original Cyanogen, Inc. employees when the company incorporated last year. But he’s been giving Android users some great stuff for much longer than that: most people’s first exposure to his work comes from ClockworkMod, still one of the most widely-used custom recoveries available, not to mention various tools like ROM Manager, ClockworkMod Tether, and DeskSMS.

CyanogenMod reveals new branding that represents openness, security and customization

cyanogenmod logo 1

Well, folks, it looks like CyanogenMod, Inc. is starting to shape up to look like a real legit company. The company has already made big deals with phone manufacturers and successfully raised a good deal of money to help in their endeavors, and now they are making some changes to the way they present themselves.

Introducing the new CyanogenMOd branding. The logo sits above — clean, cool, calm, collected, and cyan. Oh, yes, lots of cyan. But the logo isn’t just a pretty collection of lines and pleasing colors. CyanogenMod designed it to be a symbol.

cyanogenmod logo 2

We’ll start with the centerpiece, which is said to be the heart of the logo. It represents the user, and their ability to customize the experience to fit their needs. That is to say, the user is the most important aspect of everything CyanogenMod does, and there will always be a commitment to give you the flexibility to do what you want and need.

Tying into that flexiblity is openness, because nothing says customizable like being able to get your paws wet deep within the source code. CyanogenMod is always open source, so you can take a build, do what you’d like with it and build it for yourself. Of course, the company expects proper credit should you publicly distribute it for others to use, but they aren’t asking for much more than that.

Finally, the user should be able to do all of this with a platform that they can be sure is secure. No NSA backdoors, no snooping, no nothing — simply use it, and have peace of mind doing so. That’s the CyanogeMod way.

cyanogenmod logo 4

What’s going to happen with Cid, the former mascot and logo? Well, he’s not going anywhere — he’ll be a staple of the vast community that surrounds CyanogenMod, and he’ll be along for the ride to see everyone through all the highs (and maybe some lows) in this exciting ride.

We like it. Nay, we love it, and everything that it stands for. Branding seems so simple from the outside looking in, but it’s these core values CyanogenMod were built on, and we’re glad to see that the company hasn’t lost sight of that even in their proudest moments. Be sure to read their take over at the CyanogenMod blog.

Disney games go on a massive post-holiday sale

With the holidays practically over, shops and retailers are giving one last hoorah to holiday sales and promos. In that spirit, Google Play Store has just announced a huge discount on some of Disney‘s games both for the young and the young at heart.

disney-frozen-free-fall

Disney’s game collection on Android mostly revolve around the company’s iconic characters, like Mickey Mouse, Perry from Phineas and Ferb, or Mike and Sully from Monsters, Inc. Some are simply themed variations of well-known games and puzzles but not all of the games are for kids only. Some cater to older audiences, notably different versions of Temple Run that revolve around Disney films like Oz and Brave.

disney-temple-run-oz

If any of these tickled your fancy or that of your young ones, now might just be the right time to get your hands full with some of them. Google has just announced a big 90% discount off some of the titles. However, one problem with such free or low-priced apps and games is that you might be required to make some in-app purchase later on in order to advance, which seems to be especially the case with this Disney collection.

disney-monsters-u

Still, the $0.49 price tag might be quite tempting and might just be enough to keep some toddlers busy for a good number of hours. Google hasn’t mentioned how long the sale will last, but it isn’t hard to imagine that it might end in a few days or a week at most.

CyanogenMod Reaches 10 Million Devices, Oppo N1 CM Edition Gets a Promo Video

Despite Google’s best efforts, some smartphone and tablet manufacturers are perfectly content to allow their devices to languish, never to receive the latest version of Android through any sort of official channel. That’s where Cyanogen, Inc. comes in: the newly incorporated company promises customized versions of Android that, in addition to providing the latest AOSP has to offer, are much more feature-rich than OEM firmware. Installation of CyanogenMod software requires a compatible device and foreknowledge of certain dev tools, of course, but it remains the most consumer-friendly third-party ROM available.

Apparently, the promise of Android updates is attractive to a vast number of smartphone and tablet users: more than 10 million devices are running the ROM. That’s according to a Google+ post by Steve Kondik, CTO of CyanogenMod.

To clarify, 10 million is an estimate; only users who voluntarily report activity via CMStats, a built-in analytic service, are counted. Still, the number is impressive, and certainly an indication that the desire for aftermarket Android solutions is growing.

Perhaps in celebration of the milestone (and the additional $23 million in funding they just took in), Cyanogen took to YouTube to promote the Oppo N1, the first-ever CyanogenMod-certified smartphone. Launching December 24, it’s the fledgling company’s first attempt to translate its software success to the hardware business. As you can imagine, we’ll be keeping a keen eye on this first phone attempt, as well as any others that come through this ROM-turned-corporate entity.

Disney Games and Apps on Sale for AndroidLooking to fill your phone or tablet full of Disney games to keep your kids entertained before the holiday festivities? I know I am. It looks like Disney pulled in some favors and has managed to get, for now, 12 games in the their Play Store portfolio on sale for $0.49. Last I checked, but I could be wrong, the lowest price you can list an app for is $0.99. So, what do you look to gain? Well, you could hit up their developer page and take a look at all their apps for yourself, or just check out the ones on sale in the list below.

There are also a number of other games that have always been free, but are offering in-app purchase sales.

Better get to business, I’m sure the little ones will appreciate it. I wonder if it’s only 12 apps to hint towards the 12 days of Christmas, or if its just a handy coincidence.

Polaroid iM1836 Android Camera Gets A Sales Ban

The Polaroid iM1836 was introduced at CES 2013 and promised a lot of features including interchangeable lenses as well as being powered by Android. Unfortunately most consumers who have tried the device say that they don’t recommend anyone else using it due to its poor performance. Right now the device may finally be put out of its misery as a preliminary sales ban has been imposed on it courtesy of Nikon.

Polaroid Nikon

Those who are familiar with cameras will immediately notice that the Polaroid iM1836 Android camera is quite similar in design to the Nikon J1. Similarities exist in body shape, color, and even button placement which clearly indicates that the iM1836 is a rip off of the J1.

Nikon filed a patent infringement and trade dress infringement against Sakar International, Inc. (the company that makes the Polaroid iM1836). After both companies appeared at the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York they agreed on a preliminary injunction.

According to a press release made by Nikon “On October 11, 2013, Nikon Corporation and Nikon Inc. (“Nikon”) sued Sakar International, Inc. (“Sakar”) in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York for design patent infringement and trade dress infringement arising from Sakar’s “Polaroid iM1836″ digital camera (Case No. 13-Civ-7228 (S.D.N.Y)).”

“Shortly thereafter, Nikon moved for a preliminary injunction to stop the sales and advertising of the Polaroid iM1836 digital camera. After appearing before the Court, Sakar and Nikon agreed on the terms of a preliminary injunction. The Court thus issued a Preliminary Injunction Order on December 4, 2013 (Eastern Standard Time).”

“As part of the injunction, Sakar will no longer manufacture, import, advertise, promote, offer for sale, sell, or ship the Polaroid iM1836 digital camera in its present configuration.”

“The abovementioned design patent and trade dress rights are related to the “Nikon 1″ Advanced Camera with Interchangeable Lenses.”

OmniROM device roster grows by six

The Android world is definitely not lacking in custom ROMs but a few, like CyanogenMod, Paranoid Android, and AOKP, have risen to become the more popular ones. One new contender, OmniROM, is slowly but surely building up its army by adding six more smartphones to its list of supported devices.

omnirom-logo

OmniROM was conceived primarily as a reaction to a change of direction that took place within CyanogenMod. With the core team incorporating itself into Cyanogen, Inc., many in the ROM community felt the need to have an even more community-driven endeavor. Thus, OmniROM was born and was led by popular Android developers such as Super Su’s Chainfire, TWRP’s Dees_Troy, and Focal’s XplodedWild.

Last week, OmniROM announced the start of nightly builds based on Android 4.4 KitKat. Those builds covered a good number of devices already, including the Nexus 4, 5, and all version of the Nexus 7, the OPPO Find 5, Samsung Galaxy S, S II, S III, Note, and Note II, among others. Now the team is revealing new builds for more devices. Joining the ranks is the OPPO N1, which, somewhat ironically, runs CyanogenMod, the Sony Xperia T, Z, and ZL, as well as the HTC One, both the international version and the model from AT&T.

All in all, this brings the total number of supported devices, both current and in the very near future, to 20. That is still a considerably low number, especially if the ROM wants to step into CyanogenMod’s shoes. But given the same amount of community participation that catapulted CyanogenMod to the top, OmniROM might still manage to reach its goal.

OPPO N1 international availability starts on December 10

As previously reported, the OPPO N1 will finally be open for purchase this month. On December 10, people from other parts of the globe will get to enjoy their choice of OPPO’s customized Android experience or CyanogenMod‘s own flavor.

oppo-n1

OPPO formally announced its much talked about smartphone last September. Despite being primarily a Chinese brand, the N1 managed to catch attention of the global Android community because of its ties with CyanogenMod, or rather, the newly formed Cyanogen, Inc. The smartphone itself is a mixed bag of features, starting with a slightly older 1.7 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor, paired with 2 GB of RAM. The screen is quite large at 5.9 inches, but doesn’t disappoint with its 1920×1080 pixel resolution. It only has one camera, pegged at 13 megapixels. To call it a rear camera, however, would be inaccurate, as the section of the device housing it can be rotated to face the user as well.

By itself, the OPPO N1 sounds rather common by now, but its claim to fame, of course, is the software. Or to be more correct, one of the software offered on the device. There is still a bit of confusion surrounding this aspect of the N1. Currently, there are two models of the device available. There is a regular version that runs OPPO’s Android tweaks, but there is also another one that has CyanogenMod running out of the box, providing users with a near-vanilla Android experience. That said, even the regular N1 will be able to easily install and boot into CyanogenMod without having to root and flash the device.

There is no information yet on which version will launch next week, though, in the end, there might not be much difference except for a few extra steps. We can only assume that both models will be priced the same as only one price tag has been given, $599 or $449 for European buyers.

Rumors surface indicating Cyanogen, Inc. ready to get into smartphone business with their own device

gionee_elife_e6

According to undisclosed sources, Cyanogen, Inc. is working on producing an “official” CyanogenMod smartphone powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8974AC processor running at 2.5GHz, a slight step up from the current crop of devices running Snapdragon 800 chips at 2.4GHz. Reports indicate the device will be built specifically to run CyanogenMod, although it is unclear what other physical differences there may be compared with something like the Oppo N1 that supports CyanogenMod. Speaking of Oppo, although they were quick out of the gate to support Cyanogen with a special edition of the N1 that comes with CyanogenMod pre-installed, no one is saying whether they will be selected as the OEM for the new device. Another player in the Chinese market, Gionee, has surfaced as a possible contender via their upcoming ELIFE E6 device.

Chinese media outlets have recently reported on a new smartphone, the ELIFE E6 pictured above, that runs on the same Snapdragon 8974AC processor that Cyanogen supposedly has an eye on for their device. The CEO of Gionee as well as their corporate marketing folks have teased this via Chinese social network Weibo. Gionee has been compared to Xiaomi, a solid player in the Chinese market looking to breakout onto the global stage to take on the likes of Samsung, HTC, LG and Sony. Whether the fact this device has surfaced at close to the same time that rumors of a Cyanogen phone using the same chip means anything remains to be seen.

Back in September, right after Cyanogen, Inc. was formed, Steve Kondik and Koushik Dutta indicated they had a long-term goal to produce a Cyanogen smartphone and that they had a partner lined up. This latest rumor could be an indication that they are much closer to realizing this dream than many may have thought.

OmniROM “open ROM” coming soon to take CyanogenMod’s place

A group of Android developers have joined forces to create OmniROM, a new ROM in a rapidly shifting Android custom ROM scene. With a title such as “open ROM”, this new project sets out to try to occupy a hole recently left by CyanogenMod.

omnirom-logo

CyanogenMod is, without a doubt, the most popular custom ROM for Android, with a strong following and an equally strong list of supported devices. Recently, the core developers have revealed after the fact that they have formed themselves into a company, Cyanogen, Inc. and have also partnered with OPPO to ship with the phone manufacturer’s latest OPPO N1 device. This has ruffled a few feathers and raised questions about the ROM’s future, as well as some conflicts of interests when interacting with the once purely community-based group.

CyanogenMod is, of course, not the only custom ROM around and there are others that also have a large following. But those who want CyanogenMod’s blend of development and openness might find their new home in OmniROM. Based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), OmniROM is being spearheaded by Chainfire, the popular developer of the Super SU and Triangle Away tools, Dees_Troy, lead developer of TWRP custom recovery, and XplodedWild, developer of the Focal camera app who withdrew his app from CyanogenMod because of recent events. The project will attempt to take off where CyanogenMod left, with customzations, tweaks, and apps built on top of AOSP. And of course, a focus on the user community.

The developers will also be working on a new open source ROM installer called OmniInstaller, which will simplify the process of installing not just OmniROM but other custom ROMs such as Paranoid Android and AOKP as well. There is no timeline yet when a first release will be made, but so far the only supported devices are currently composed of the Nexus 4, both Nexus 7 models, and the Nexus 10.

The future of CyanogenMod: ‘We still have a lot of convincing to do’

CyanogenMod, Inc.

The 'how' of loading custom firmware isn't as difficult as the 'why'

Speaking to what would traditionally be the target audience for custom Android ROMs at the Big Android BBQ, Steve Kondik of the newly-incorporated CyanogenMod, Inc. spent a little time laying out the future prospects for the company. As we would expect this close to the announcement of its plans, we were given much of the same information.

Yes, a so-called "one click" installer is on its way. As are several new and inventive features like cloud backup and secure messaging. The Oppo N1 will even be released in short order as the first phone to ship (at least in some capacity) with CyanogenMod pre-loaded.

And even with 8.2 million users of its custom firmware, there are clearly still hurdles in CyanogenMod's future.
