Cyanogen Inc hires high-ranking industry execs

Cyanogen, the company, is not your grandfather’s CyanogenMod, so to speak. The company is slowly growing beyond its “indie” roots to become an Android startup to really reckon with. And this batch of hirings, bearing names from some big industry players, shows just how much the company wants to be taken seriously.

Dave Herman is now the Vice-President of Products. Herman has held undisclosed key roles in Hulu, Amazon, and Microsoft and is said to have been responsible for a number of popular products. Former Director of Engineering at HTC, Tyler Carper joins Cyanogen, Inc. as the new VP of Engineering. Last but not the least is Vik Natarajan who was the former VP for Corporate Marketing in MediaTek, now holding Cyanogen’s top role for Global Partnerships and Distribution.

But what do these hires mean in practice. For one, it reflects Cyanogen Inc’s vision as a truly competitive company, with positions you’d only hear about in businesses. It might just be titles for some, but it does give it an air of credibility when striking up partnerships with OEM’s like OPPO and OnePlus. Secondly, it expands Cyanogen’s knowledge and expertise beyond its comfort zone. The company truly started off as a bunch of Android enthusiasts creating one of the most popular custom ROMs. Now they’re equipping themselves to deal with hardware, markets, and business from all over the world.

Fears of Cyanogen Inc turning evil when it went corporate have so far not materialized, though some might perhaps argue that it is still too early to say so. Cyanogen Inc has continued to work closely with the community side of CyanogenMod, carrying over changes and new features it implemented in OnePlus’ CyanogenMod 11S and even making available its new Theme Engine to AOSP and other ROMs. But even if Cyanogen Inc should fall from grace, the Android community can rest easy that others like Paranoid Android, OmniROM and many more will be ready to step up.

Atari to bring RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 Mobile to Android this Winter

Atari is a name that many of you will be familiar with. The younger generation might not be very familiar with the company that pioneered the gaming industry so many years ago. In a recent press release that just hit our inbox Atari announced a few things that they will be doing to make a corporate comeback.

“Atari is more than a game publishing company; it’s an iconic brand that has established a passionate and timeless culture,” said Fred Chesnais, Chief Executive Officer, Atari, Inc. “Known across multiple generations around the world, Atari will continue to embrace all audiences. What the company has accomplished over the years is no small feat, but there is more to come. We’re looking forward to delivering on our new strategy and engaging with our audience in new ways across multiple channels as the next era of Atari unfolds. We are leading a rebuilding exercise in a highly volatile industry, so at the same time we are also aware of the challenges that lay ahead.”

Atari Rollercoaster Tycoon 4 mobileA few bullet points from the release shed light on plans for social casinos, real-money gambling and YouTube with exclusive video content. We are a bit more interested in their mobile endeavors though. The current Atari offerings in the Play Store are slim with a greatest hits title and a stand alone Centipedes: Origins and Circus Atari. A small mention near the end of the release is what caught our attention though. Later in the winter of this year, Atari will be bringing RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 Mobile to Android.

Unfortunately that means the iOS users have a big jump on the game as it has been available for a number of months already. Such is the way of mobile games though. I remember spending countless hours building parks and creating roller coasters from the ground up. Atari also mentions there will be a multiplayer PC version coming around the same time. So that should be cool, as long as they don’t make it some silly Facebook game.

Will RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 Mobile be on your wishlist until it is launched? I know I will be setting reminders to check back in the next few months.

Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 Technology Available In Japan This Year

What happens when your smartphone runs out of battery power? Normally you would have to leave it plugged into its wall charger which usually takes around 7 hours. What if there is a way to cut this time by as much as 75 percent? Getting a smartphone to fully charge will then only take around 2 to 3 hours.

quick charge 2

Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., has developed a technology that does his which is called Quick Charge 2.0 and it’s going to be available for use in Japan this year. The company has partnered with NTT DOCOMO to test out Quick Charge 2.0′s rapid charging capabilities.

According to Alex Katouzian, senior vice president, product management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., “Japan has been ahead of the curve when it comes to the adoption of innovative technology. The commitment demonstrated from a leading technology carrier like DOCOMO is an important step towards a strong Quick Charge 2.0 ecosystem in Japan and beyond. We look forward to continuing the integration of Quick Charge 2.0 technology within the mobile industry to further enhance the consumer experience.”

Quick Charge 2.0 is an improvement over the Quick Charge 1.0 technology. The latter can only provide up to 10 watts of power while the former can provide a power of as high as 60 watts which effectively cuts the amount of time needed to charge a mobile device by as much as 75 percent.

Kazuaki Terunuma, Vice President and Managing Director of Communication Device Development Department at NTT DOCOMO, said that “With insatiable consumer usage of their devices, faster charging is more important than ever to bring enhanced convenience to the mobile experience. DOCOMO expects the promise of true fast charging can finally be realized with the introduction of Quick Charge 2.0 into commercial devices and a supporting ecosystem.”

Not all smartphone models will be able to support this new technology as certain requirements must first be met.  First, the device itself must be capable of supporting the Quick Charge 2.0 technology which can be through a standalone IC solution or through the PMIC power management integrated circuit of Snapdragon 800, 600, and 400 processors. Next, a compatible wall charger must also be used which contains specific circuitry to take advantage of this fast charging technology.

NTT DOCOMO will be providing its customers with new Quick Charge 2.0 wall chargers later this year which they can use with their compatible devices. Customers will still be able to use their old Quick Charge 1.0 charger on their devices however the time needed to fully charge the device will be longer.

After the introduction of this technology in Japan it is expected to be available to the rest of the world soon.

allcast

Since his departure from Cyanogen, Inc., Koush has been a pretty busy guy. Yesterday, he released AllCast Receiver to the Play Store, an app that essentially turns any Android device into a casting target, a la the now-extinct CheapCast. Today, he pushed an update to AllCast that brings a couple of new features, including Google Play Music streaming and the previously-teased headphone mode. Check out the latter in action:

This is essentially a jab at Roku’s remote, which includes a built-in headphone jack for private listening while watching content on the TV.

4K tablets on the horizon

Japan4KtabletWe’re at a point where we’re going to 4K all the things. We are seeing 4K televisions, laptops and with smartphone manufacturers also toying with the idea of making 2K and 4K smartphones it would only be a matter of time before we’d see tablets make the same leap. If Japan Display, Inc. is any indicator, tablets may be making that leap sooner rather than later. The company just announced a 10.1 inch display with a resolution of 3840 x 2160. That’s a whopping 438 ppi for a tablet — something that hasn’t been done on a tablet yet. Currently the GalaxyPRO 8.4 holds the most pixels per inch with 359.

specsJDI4k

JDI is even using an RGB pixel matrix meaning that they aren’t using trickery techniques to achieve this resolution. The screen boasts a 1100:1 contrast ratio and allows for a 160-degree viewing angle. It also boasts a peak brightness of 400 nits. Power consumption and battery life are a concern but it looks like the company has that handled as well.

Of course, as of right now, there is no word on which companies are lining up to get their hands on these displays but we can guess that there will be many.

Motorola Solutions signs licensing agreement with Microsoft

motorola_solutions_logo

Motorola Solutions has today signed a licensing agreement with Microsoft. It is important to remember that Motorola Solutions is NOT Motorola Mobility, which is the company that has released the Moto X and Moto G. Motorola Solutions is essentially the half of Motorola that Google left behind when they bought the smartphone half of the company.

According to the agreement it seems that Microsoft and Motorola Solutions have set their eyes on the mobile market, including devices both Android and Chrome OS. Hit the break for more info and the press release.

This is not the first licensing agreement that Microsoft has signed. They’ve signed agreements in the past with companies like Samsung and HTC. In fact, these deals have brought in more than $2 billion a year in revenue for Microsoft.

We still don’t know the exact terms of the agreement, but more details should be released soon.

Microsoft and Motorola Solutions sign licensing agreement

Agreement with Motorola Solutions covers devices running Android and Chrome.

REDMOND, Wash. — April 21, 2014 — Microsoft Corp. announced on Monday a patent licensing agreement with Motorola Solutions, Inc., a leading provider of communication solutions and services for enterprise and government customers. The license provides worldwide coverage under Microsoft’s patent portfolio for Motorola Solutions’ devices running the Android™ platform and Chrome OS™ operating system.

“Microsoft and Motorola Solutions share a respect for intellectual property and a commitment to fair and reasonable patent licensing programs,” said Nick Psyhogeos, general manager, associate general counsel, IP licensing of the Innovation and Intellectual Property Group at Microsoft. “Microsoft prefers licensing to litigation, since licensing is a more effective way to share technology and accelerate the pace of innovation.”

“Our Motorola Solutions communications technology works best for everyone when it is backed with robust intellectual property and patents,” said Joe White, vice president of Enterprise Mobile Computing, Motorola Solutions. “We are pleased to have agreed upon a solution that allows our customers to purchase Android products from Motorola Solutions with confidence.”

Microsoft’s commitment to licensing IP

The patent agreement is another example of the important role intellectual property (IP) plays in ensuring a healthy and vibrant technology ecosystem. Since Microsoft launched its IP licensing program in December 2003, the company has entered into more than 1,100 licensing agreements and continues to develop programs that open Microsoft’s IP portfolio for customers, partners and competitors. The program was developed to provide access to Microsoft’s significant R&D investments and its growing, broad patent and IP portfolio. Microsoft’s specific patent licensing program for Android device-makers has resulted in signed license agreements with numerous companies, including Samsung, ZTE, LG, HTC, Acer and Barnes & Noble.

[Interview] Koushik "Koush" Dutta On Leaving Cyanogen, Inc. And His Return To ClockworkMod

duttaKoushik Dutta, better known as “Koush” to the Android power user community, was one of the original Cyanogen, Inc. employees when the company incorporated last year. But he’s been giving Android users some great stuff for much longer than that: most people’s first exposure to his work comes from ClockworkMod, still one of the most widely-used custom recoveries available, not to mention various tools like ROM Manager, ClockworkMod Tether, and DeskSMS.

CyanogenMod reveals new branding that represents openness, security and customization

cyanogenmod logo 1

Well, folks, it looks like CyanogenMod, Inc. is starting to shape up to look like a real legit company. The company has already made big deals with phone manufacturers and successfully raised a good deal of money to help in their endeavors, and now they are making some changes to the way they present themselves.

Introducing the new CyanogenMOd branding. The logo sits above — clean, cool, calm, collected, and cyan. Oh, yes, lots of cyan. But the logo isn’t just a pretty collection of lines and pleasing colors. CyanogenMod designed it to be a symbol.

cyanogenmod logo 2

We’ll start with the centerpiece, which is said to be the heart of the logo. It represents the user, and their ability to customize the experience to fit their needs. That is to say, the user is the most important aspect of everything CyanogenMod does, and there will always be a commitment to give you the flexibility to do what you want and need.

Tying into that flexiblity is openness, because nothing says customizable like being able to get your paws wet deep within the source code. CyanogenMod is always open source, so you can take a build, do what you’d like with it and build it for yourself. Of course, the company expects proper credit should you publicly distribute it for others to use, but they aren’t asking for much more than that.

Finally, the user should be able to do all of this with a platform that they can be sure is secure. No NSA backdoors, no snooping, no nothing — simply use it, and have peace of mind doing so. That’s the CyanogeMod way.

cyanogenmod logo 4

What’s going to happen with Cid, the former mascot and logo? Well, he’s not going anywhere — he’ll be a staple of the vast community that surrounds CyanogenMod, and he’ll be along for the ride to see everyone through all the highs (and maybe some lows) in this exciting ride.

We like it. Nay, we love it, and everything that it stands for. Branding seems so simple from the outside looking in, but it’s these core values CyanogenMod were built on, and we’re glad to see that the company hasn’t lost sight of that even in their proudest moments. Be sure to read their take over at the CyanogenMod blog.

Disney games go on a massive post-holiday sale

With the holidays practically over, shops and retailers are giving one last hoorah to holiday sales and promos. In that spirit, Google Play Store has just announced a huge discount on some of Disney‘s games both for the young and the young at heart.

disney-frozen-free-fall

Disney’s game collection on Android mostly revolve around the company’s iconic characters, like Mickey Mouse, Perry from Phineas and Ferb, or Mike and Sully from Monsters, Inc. Some are simply themed variations of well-known games and puzzles but not all of the games are for kids only. Some cater to older audiences, notably different versions of Temple Run that revolve around Disney films like Oz and Brave.

If any of these tickled your fancy or that of your young ones, now might just be the right time to get your hands full with some of them. Google has just announced a big 90% discount off some of the titles. However, one problem with such free or low-priced apps and games is that you might be required to make some in-app purchase later on in order to advance, which seems to be especially the case with this Disney collection.

Still, the $0.49 price tag might be quite tempting and might just be enough to keep some toddlers busy for a good number of hours. Google hasn’t mentioned how long the sale will last, but it isn’t hard to imagine that it might end in a few days or a week at most.

CyanogenMod Reaches 10 Million Devices, Oppo N1 CM Edition Gets a Promo Video

Despite Google’s best efforts, some smartphone and tablet manufacturers are perfectly content to allow their devices to languish, never to receive the latest version of Android through any sort of official channel. That’s where Cyanogen, Inc. comes in: the newly incorporated company promises customized versions of Android that, in addition to providing the latest AOSP has to offer, are much more feature-rich than OEM firmware. Installation of CyanogenMod software requires a compatible device and foreknowledge of certain dev tools, of course, but it remains the most consumer-friendly third-party ROM available.

Apparently, the promise of Android updates is attractive to a vast number of smartphone and tablet users: more than 10 million devices are running the ROM. That’s according to a Google+ post by Steve Kondik, CTO of CyanogenMod.

To clarify, 10 million is an estimate; only users who voluntarily report activity via CMStats, a built-in analytic service, are counted. Still, the number is impressive, and certainly an indication that the desire for aftermarket Android solutions is growing.

Perhaps in celebration of the milestone (and the additional $23 million in funding they just took in), Cyanogen took to YouTube to promote the Oppo N1, the first-ever CyanogenMod-certified smartphone. Launching December 24, it’s the fledgling company’s first attempt to translate its software success to the hardware business. As you can imagine, we’ll be keeping a keen eye on this first phone attempt, as well as any others that come through this ROM-turned-corporate entity.

Disney puts 12 games on sale for $.49, grab them while you can

In case you haven’t realized it, Disney has a pretty big presence in the Google Play Store. If it’s not cute brain puzzlers like Where’s My Water and Where’s My Perry, it’s Disney-infused versions of games like Temple Run: Oz and Temple Run: Brave. No matter what your taste is, though, you can grab all of their paid titles on sale for a limited time.

They’re all $.49, which is a small price to pay for the hours of time-draining fun these games can provide. Here’s the full list of titles up for grabs at this irresistible price point (there are 12 in all):

These titles are normally $2-3, so you’re saving more than just a few pieces of copper if you decide to bite on any of them. It’s also worth noting that some of these titles are available in free flavoring, though you can expect ads for the privilege of not having to pay out of your pocket. Be sure to take a look at Disney’s full list of titles available in the Google Play Store.

Disney locks down a Christmas deal, 12 apps on sale for $0.49

Disney Games and Apps on Sale for AndroidLooking to fill your phone or tablet full of Disney games to keep your kids entertained before the holiday festivities? I know I am. It looks like Disney pulled in some favors and has managed to get, for now, 12 games in the their Play Store portfolio on sale for $0.49. Last I checked, but I could be wrong, the lowest price you can list an app for is $0.99. So, what do you look to gain? Well, you could hit up their developer page and take a look at all their apps for yourself, or just check out the ones on sale in the list below.

There are also a number of other games that have always been free, but are offering in-app purchase sales.

Better get to business, I’m sure the little ones will appreciate it. I wonder if it’s only 12 apps to hint towards the 12 days of Christmas, or if its just a handy coincidence.
