iPad 5 Rumored Release Date and Specs

Didn’t get the latest iPad 4 this Christmas?  This might be a letdown but don’t worry about it because if the rumors are true then this coming March your tablet would have been outdated as Apple is said to release its iPad 5. The upcoming device is said to be thinner, lighter and is similar to the iPad mini in detail yet comes with a full size 9.7 inch display.

ipad-5

Reports of an iPad 5 hitting the market this March was first revealed by Japanese blog site Macotakara. If this is the case then Apple has shortened its release cycle for this particular device. This will come just 8 months after the iPad 3 was released and 5 months after the iPad 4.

As for the specifications only a few details are known as of this moment which we have listed below.

  • Height: 4 mm
  • Width: 17 mm
  • Depth: 2 mm

The dimensions provided are simply unrealistic but the source could probably mean that they are the difference between the current model and the upcoming one.

The iPad 4 has a dimension of 241.2 mm by 185.7 mm by 9.4 mm so we could subtract the numbers above to give us a general overview of what the size of the next device will be. It’s going to be 237.3 mm by 168.7 mm by 7.4 mm which is quite impressive actually.

The upcoming device will be available in white-silver and black-slate which is similar to the iPad mini.

Since Apple hasn’t released any official statement regarding this yet it’s best to take this rumor with a grain of salt. Macotakara however has an uncanny way of accurately predicting upcoming Apple devices. The popular blog has been correct in their prediction of release dates, design information as well as dimensions of upcoming iPad devices.

If this rumor is true then Apple is shifting its gears and is aggressively releasing more products to protect its market share. This is actually a good move since the company is competing with various Android tablet manufacturers who are constantly releasing newer models which are eating into the iPad market.

Nexus 7 fares well against latest iPads in SquareTrade’s “Drop and Dunk” Test

Drop tests have become a bit of a cultural necessity in the mobile tech kingdom, and another interesting test has been uploaded to YouTube for all to enjoy. This one comes from SquareTrade, the biggest provider of third-party warranties in the land. They obviously have some interest in tests like these considering they’ll be the ones replacing broken tablets for many of you, and what they’ve done here is interesting.

SquareTrade pitted the Nexus 7 up against the iPad Mini and the iPad 3 in what it calls a “drop and dunk” test. The drop test is actually performed using its “drop bot,” a machine that drops each device at the exact same angles and velocities. It’s pretty neat, actually, considering many people struggle to get devices to drop exactly the same in conventional drop tests.

In that portion of the trials the Nexus 7 seemed to have a considerable advantage over the two iPad devices. The first drop only saw a corner of the slab crack, though it couldn’t best the iPad Mini which only suffered some nicks on the edges. The iPad 3 was completely out of it.

The second drop — a face-down planche, if you will — proved devastating for both iPad devices, and while the Nexus 7 wasn’t completely in the clear its cracks were only minimal and didn’t do much to hamper the experience.

Finally, the “dunk” test had all 3 tablets submerged in water for the same amount of time to see how they stood up against water damage. None of the tablets seemed to malfunction, though SquareTrade erroneously suggest the Nexus 7 was unresponsive. Had they waited until it fully rebooted we would have a more accurate account of what ended up happening, but since it was turning on we assume things were OK.

We would never perform these tests on our own devices, of course, so you won’t be getting any results from us in regards to that. Just make sure that huge 7 inch slate is in your bag and not your back pocket before you start doing cannonballs all over the place. Take a look at the drop test video above.

download app FarmYard Piano
Developer: mike Constantine
Price: $0.99   Download on the App Store

Moonpans Apps today is pleased to announce the release and immediate availability of FarmYard Piano 1.0, its new children’s educational title developed specifically for iPad devices. FarmYard Piano is a very simple to use, single screen app based in a farmyard. The child just needs to select an animal from the top menu, then play that animal’s sound on the keyboard below. The sounds span 7 musical notes from C to B and can be set to a single animal – pigs, cows, sheep, ducks, or for a very fun result, a mixture of all 4!

Making full use of the iPad’s, multi-touch feature, many animals can be played at the same time or played in quick succession by running a finger up and down the keyboard. The app has been designed to give young children a strong audio and visual reaction, as whenever an animal is touched not only will the sound play, but the app will also animate as it pushes out its oink, moo, baa or quack.

Several age groups will enjoy FarmYard Piano, from babies who will enjoy the audio and visual reactions, toddlers who like making as much noise as possible, to older piano savvy children who will be able to play simple tunes, but would prefer to Baa, Baa Black Sheep using actual sheep rather than a boring old piano!

The New iPad compared to ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity, Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, and Huawei Mediapad 10 FHD

This image has no alt text

In one announcement Apple has again turned the tablet world on its head, but have Android tablets improved enough in a year to weather the next iPad storm? The third iteration of the iPad improves on nearly every aspect of last year’s design and will no doubt sell millions in its first few weeks of release, but compare it head-to-head with a few upcoming Android slates and you will find that on hardware alone it’s hard to declare Apple’s product the clear winner.

The new iPad’s biggest selling point is its super high-res display, featuring a  2048 x 1536 resolution. This is tops when compared to 10.1-inch offerings from Samsung, ASUS, and Huawei. Though the Transformer Pad Infinity and Mediapad 10 FHD both feature 1080p HD displays, Apple still boasts the best pixel density. In terms of power, however, the iPad HD lags behind slightly.

The dual-core chip introduced in the iPad 2 has been improved with the latest A5X processor. It’s not the  quad-core power Android makers are already already building into devices, but Apple claims their new CPU offers four times the performance of Tegra 3. We’d like to see the benchmark for that. Apple is notoriously coy on detailing the amount of RAM found in their iPad devices, but signs point towards 1GB. Huawei’s latest features 2GB of RAM. At the same time, the iPad is getting thicker (up to 0.37 inches compared to the iPad 2′s 0.34 inch thickness) while other tablets are getting thinner and thinner. The Transformer Pad Infinity measures in at a mere 0.33 inches.

Where the questions remain are in the intangibles. Google’s Ice Cream Sandwich does a lot of things right to improve on the Android user experience, but iOS and its broader collection of tablet-specific apps are favored by many. Apple called attention to this during the unveiling of the new iPad. While this has a lot less to do with manufacturers and more to do with the Android ecosystem, it’s a definite point Google wants to work on. The iPad has selling power while Android tablets are still struggling to gain a larger part of the market. It’s hard to say how newer models will carve into the iPad’s share, but manufacturers have finally addressed pricing issues and all should sell for close to, if not lower than, the iPad’s $499 entry point.

The lessons learned and improvements made by Android manufacturers over the past couple of years are creating some viable iPad competitors that on paper should give Apple a run for its money. Things are going to get interesting over the next few months, but it’s hard to crown an iPad killer just yet. So which comes out on top in your opinion? Sound off in the poll below and let us know!

Samsung Lawyers Let The Aggressiveness Start; Add Four New Lawsuits Against Apples In The Netherlands

Last week Samsung said that they were going to take a more aggressive stance in the Apple/Samsung patent war.  Despite the fact that Samsung has sued Apple in just about as many countries and court rooms as Apple has sued Samsung, it appeared that Samsung was the underdog.

Fast forward to today and Samsung has launched four new lawsuits against Apple, claiming that Apple’s iPhone and iPad devices that use third generation technology, infringe on Samsung’s patents. Yes essentially Samsung is suggesting that every single iPhone with 3G violates Samsung’s patents. A lawyer representing Samsung in the Netherlands told a Hague courtroom;
“Apple is consciously, structurally infringing the 3G patents.” (source: Bloomberg)

More after the break

Apple’s lawyers at first responded saying that the iPhone models that were 3g (almost every iPhone in existence today minus a handful of 2g phones), capable contained chips made by Intel and Samsung licenses were taken care of that way.  They than went on to say they are in licensing discussions with Samsung right now so an injunction would be premature.

European courts move a lot quicker than US courts and if an injunction was granted it would be put into effect very quickly.  Samsung’s lawsuit could not have come at a more inopportune time for Apple. It is widely expected that Apple will announce the next new iPhone next week at their Cupertino headquarters. It’s also expected that this will be a 3G only device and hence violate Samsung’s patents.

In addition to the injunction, Samsung may be hoping that Apple pushes back the release of the next iPhone to change the chip-set to get out of the patent violation.  Apple typically releases iPhone models in the middle of the summer. Historically they are already late with this new device.  While it gives Apple a great ramp up to the holiday season, a delay in release for any reason may mean they miss the 2011 holiday season.

Apple Won’t Source Samsung for Mobile Processors Moving Forward

This image has no alt text

A standing arrangement that saw Samsung as the manufacturer of processor components for Apple’s mobile devices will reportedly end next year as the Cupertino-based technology giant hands the reigns over to Taiwan Seminconductor Manufacturing Company. Samsung was tapped to supply Apple with the A4 and A5 chips used in recent iPhone and iPad devices, but increased competition from the Korean manufacturer’s lineup of Android smartphones and an ongoing legal dispute have no doubt soured relations between the two companies.

Rumors that the two companies would part ways started up earlier this year, though the reveal that the A5 chip found in the iPad 2 would still be Samsung-made proved initial reports false. That was before Apple alleged that Samsung copied the design of their iOS products in the US courts and is doing the same in Korea, showing little hope that business relations might be salvaged.

Access Your Computer Remotely With These iOS Apps for iPhone and iPad

iphone rdpThis article has been updated for 2011 with even more of the best apps for turning your iOS device into a remote desktop client. Originally written with the idea of using the iPhone for remote access, most of the features in these applications apply equally to iPod touch and iPad devices.

If you need to access your home or office computer while you’re out and about, it’s not hard to find an app for that. Sorting through the options may take a little longer. We think some of the best remote desktop apps for iOS devices are Jugaari’s Jaadu Remote Desktop, Carter Harrison’s WinAdmin, LogMeIn’s LogMeIn Ignition, JumiTech’s JumiOne or, for customers of the KineticD backup service, KineticExtend.

All of these apps are RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) clients for your iPhone and in most ways they’re similar. The big idea is that you can use your iPhone to control your Windows PC or Mac desktop when you’re on an internal network or over the Internet.
