Huawei Ascend P2 coming to the UK in June

London event scheduled for June 18, Three UK confirms plans to carry the device
Huawei has announced that its latest flagship handset, the Ascend P2, will be hitting British shores this June. And on a related note, it's sending out press invites to an event in London on June 18. It'll be "a special moment to celebrate beauty, glamor and inspiration," the invite says. It's possible we might see some more unannounced Huawei stuff in London next month, but we're expecting the event to be very much P2-focused.
The Ascend P2 was announced back at Mobile World Congress in late February, with a 1.5GHz quad-core CPU inside, a 4.7-inch 720p display, a 13-megapixel camera and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. In terms of specs and build quality it's not quite up to the standards set by the Galaxy S4 and HTC One, but it looks like a solid mid-to-high-end device regardless.
In other Ascend P2 news, Three UK is the first British operator to announce plans to sell the device. Three says it'll support its 'Ultrafast' network on DC-HSDPA out of the box, and 4G LTE when it launches later in the year.

EE launches the ’4G Taxi’ in London and Birmingham

40 Hackney Carriages in London and 10 in Birmingham to offer free LTE for passengers
Not content with being the UK's only 4G LTE carrier thus far, EE is taking it's high speed data on the road by way of taxi. The carrier has made over 40 cabs in London and a further 10 in Birmingham to not only act as mobile advertisements for their LTE service, but will also offer free 4G data to passengers.
Each taxi is adorned with an EE 4G Mifi which will provide its passengers with an LTE mobile hotspot to connect to while taking in their journey around the city. Useful? Perhaps. It's obviously all a big marketing exercise on EE's part, but in the centre of London, free LTE even for a short amount of time is worth making use of when 3G is traditionally sketchy in the busiest parts of London. So, if you're hailing a cab and one of these approaches, jump in and give it a whirl.

HTC One video walkthrough in London
Hopefully you've already checked out Phil's HTC One hands-on impressions from the press conference in New York. But that event was just half of the HTC One launch story, as the manufacturer held a simultaneous event in London, attended by CEO Peter Chou, design lead Scott Croyle and others.
Naturally, we got some hands-on time with HTC's new shiny after the presentation, so check the video above for another perspective on the handset. You'll find five minutes of footage covering the design, BlinkFeed, the Ultrapixel camera, HTC Zoe and more.
Live from HTC in London and New York! 3 p.m. GMT/10 a.m. EST

We're coming at you live Tuesday morning not just from two cities, but from two continents. HTC has beckoned us to London and New York for what what should be a pretty major event for the struggling smartphone manufacturer. We've seen weeks of leaks and leaks for weeks. But today it all becomes official.
We're liveblogging after the break. Alex Dobie in London, and Phil Nickinson and Anndrew Vacca from New York. It all kicks off at 10 a.m. EST, or 3 p.m. GMT.
Keep this site open, folks. It's on.
HTC One leaks in press shot (again), this time in black
When HTC CEO Peter Chou showed off his company’s next flagship phone, the M7 / HTC One a few weeks ago, he had both black and silver versions in hand. Shortly after, known press pic source evleaks snagged a promo image in silver and now has posted another to Unwired View, this time of the black one. Still sporting a unique two button design seen previously and what we assume is a Sense 5.0 homescreen widget, this pic also flashes New York localized info, as compared to the earlier leak’s London home. For now, we’re left counting down until its expected unveiling on the 19th in… New York and London — see you there.

Vodafone brings fiber optics to the Shard, gives you signal high above London
What good is a spectacular view if you can’t use your phone to tell people about it? London’s newly opened 95-story skyscraper, The Shard, measures 1,016 feet, making it the tallest building in the European Union. From the 69th and 72nd floors, you can get 360 degree views of the city, up to 40 miles out, according to the building’s owners. But what happens when the 200 people who can fit on the platforms at any one time want to user their mobile devices? Vodafone’s implemented a fiber optic system that converts signal into light, allowing it to travel upwards at a rate of 100GB per second. Once they’ve hit the proper spots, its converted into a radio signal, which is then beamed to several antennas located on different floors. More information — and some cool imagery — can be found in the source link below.

Insider Reports HTC M7 Will Be Released Sooner Than Expected

Italian mobile Insider Flavio (@flapic) tweeted what he is calling an exclusive regarding the upcoming release of the HTC M7 . He predicts it will be released in London on February 19th and not at Mobile World Congress as many of us have expected. He did not disclose a source but later said he has established connections from “many years in the field” and his sources are “reliable and credible.” So he’s legit, if you don’t believe him just ask him and he’ll tell you. All kidding aside, this guy has been around for a while and might be on to something.
Excitement for HTC’s next flagship definitely feels like it’s growing. The M7 will feature a 4.7-inch 1080p display, new Sense 5.0, 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor, 2GB of RAM, a 13MP rear camera, 2MP front-facing camera, 32GB of internal storage, 2300mAh (likely internal) battery and LTE connectivity. Whether it launches at its own event in London or at MWC in Barcelona at the end of February, we won’t have long to wait.

Weekend project: Visit the Google Web Lab in London, or online

OK, so technically it's more of an outing than a project — in London, at least. It's also not strictly Android, but it's all Google, so it's all good. In the basement level of the London Science Museum, the folks from Mountain View have moved themselves in and built an exhibit they call the Google Web Lab.
A series of interactive exhibits designed to show off the power of the web, and of Google Chrome. Because, at the heart of it all, Google Chrome is controlling the whole show. The best part, is that each and every one of you, the Android Central readers, can play about with all of them without leaving your home. But, if you're in London anytime between now and June, pop by. The Science Museum is free to enter, and has a whole host of other cool, nerdy, non-Google things to look at too. It's the Google bits we're interested in here though, so lets take a look.
Google moving UK operations into new, £1 billion HQ in London in 2015

According to a joint statement issued, Google has purchased a 2.4 acre plot of land in London on which to construct a brand new base for their UK operations. Construction on the new, 1 million square foot headquarters in London is scheduled to begin by the end of 2013 subject to approval, with staff moving in sometime in 2015.
The move represents a huge investment from Google, not just financially, but in reviving part of London. The new site, located next to Kings Cross railway station, is being revived as part of a plan to create 67 acres of land filled with homes, offices and retail space.
The deal is reportedly worth £1 billion, and will see Google amalgamate their two current London offices in Victoria and on St Giles High Street into one. The other Google offices in Manchester will reportedly remain.
In the statement issued, Matt Brittin, VP of Google for Northern and Central Europe said:
“This is a big investment by Google. We’re committing further to the U.K. — where computing and the web were invented. It’s good news for Google, for London and for the UK"
At a time when so many UK based businesses are facing difficult times, the investment from Google is extremely important. Equally important will be Google's increased presence in the UK.

What I used in 2012: Richard Devine

And so, with 2012 now behind us, the traditional reflection on the year past begins. Being British, last year was pretty memorable — the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and the Summer Olympics in London two standout moments. We've also seen the mobile world continue to grow at an incredible rate, as our smartphones and tablets become an increasingly integral part of every day life.
AC's editor-in-chief, Phil Nickinson, couldn't have put it better — "In this job, you can't help but be buried in plastic from time to time." It's true of each member of the team. We talk about devices and apps all day every day, but we don't really talk about what we're using in our own, every day lives. It's been a heck of a year in these parts, so click on past the break to find out what I've been using the most during 2012.
Experimental game dev AI launches first official game, free for the holidays
“Angelina” is the brainchild of Imperial College London computer science PhD student Michael Cook, and it’s just helped craft its first official game release: A Puzzling Present. You read that correctly — a computer AI helped to develop, test, and produce a full on video game (which was subsequently released to the Google Play store late last week). The game’s even free, should you not trust a synthetic brain to produce your Santa-based mobile platformers.
Cook revealed his project to the world back in March as part of his PhD work — he calls it, “an investigation into the ways in which software can design creatively.” And while the theme of A Puzzling Present isn’t exactly what we’d call wildly creative, Cook promises the level design and sheer fun to be top notch. Or at least he’s hoping as much, lest Angelina’s algorithms need adjusting — regardless, the game is currently free on Android, should you wish to test your wits against a cold, calculating machine (and who doesn’t?).

Testing out EE’s 4G LTE in Central London
EE kindly sent me through a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 LTE last week so we could have a play around with the device on their new 4G LTE network. You may remember that when we initially tried EE's 4G at the press event we were pretty amazed with the download and upload speeds provided — we consistently got in excess of 40Mbps down and 15Mbps up.
Last week's real life tests weren't quite so impressive — our results beat 3G hands-down, but it wasn't quite as impressive as the pre-launch speed tests had indicated. A typical test would see between 10 and 20Mbps down and up to 10Mbps up. That said, things were pretty consistent over the two days I spent in London, and speeds that were on offer were more than capable of streaming music and HD video. A friend in London doing the same tests reported that his results were pretty much on par with ours, although in one instance he managed 40Mbps down. That seemed to be a one off, though, and he also reported that the phone not only lost 4G at one point, but it also lost 3G and ended up using 2G for a short time. So clearly a few teethig issues remain with the new network.
Sony puts a spin on the concept of racing games

The NFC marketing bandwagon is coming out in full force, and Sony’s latest campaign will pit users against each other in a racing game with real toy cars, as part of its "Xperia Face Off" promotion.
The Japanese phone maker will outfit its latest Xperia T phones in little race cars and the idea is to race around an obstacle course filled with NFC devices. Players have two minutes to transfer their Facebook profile pictures to as many of the other devices around the track as they can.
It looks like the “Xperia Face Off” competition is only open to players in the UK, and will happen starting this weekend for the next three consecutive weekends.
Prices are pretty sweet. The top 100 scores get selected for a prize draw, and the champion gets an all-expenses paid trip to Vegas with a plus one. The grand prize winner also gets to attend CES (maybe you'll see us there!)
When:
- (11am to 11pm)
- Saturday 3rd – Sunday 4th November
- Saturday 10th – Sunday 11th November
- Saturday 17th – Sunday 18th November
Where: Shop 13, The Truman Brewery, 15 Hanbury Street, London, E1 6QR
Entry is free.

Apple loses Samsung Galaxy Tab appeal in UK
Apple and Samsung, as many of you are undoubtedly already aware, have been trading blows in courtrooms around the world for quite some time now. Samsung, though it’s been hit hard in rulings in the past, managed to chalk up a win today, as a UK Appeals Court has denied an appeal Apple filed back in July. At the time, a London High Court ruled that the Samsung Galaxy Tab wasn’t infringing on Apple’s design, and today, a group of three Appeals Court judges refused to overturn the ruling.

This means that Apple has to take out advertisements with major UK publications telling the general public that Samsung isn’t guilty of infringement. These publications include The Daily Mail, T3 Magazine, Financial Times, and others. In addition to taking out ads with these UK publications, Apple needs to clear Samsung of any wrongdoing on its own website.
Of course, Apple won’t be required to plaster admissions of Samsung’s innocence all over its website, as the court said that a simple link to a statement on its homepage will suffice. The link has to stay up for one month, and court is requiring this because it thinks it would be best for consumers if Samsung was cleared by the company making the accusations. “The acknowledgment must come from the horse’s mouth,” the judges stated. “Nothing short of that will be sure to do the job completely.”
There is still some hope for Apple to win an appeal, however, as the company could still go through the UK Supreme Court. For now though, this ruling applies across the entire European Union. We have a feeling that Apple will take this to the Supreme Court, but with two courts already denying Apple’s appeal, it looks like Samsung is in the clear. Stay tuned, as we’ll surely have more information on these Apple-Samsung suits soon.

Android Central International round-up – September 29, 2012

The smartphone silly season continues, and now that we're about done with major announcements, it's time for the reviews and hands-on coverage to start rolling in. This past week we've published our review of the Motorola RAZR i, the first Intel-powered phone from a major manufacturer. And we've also got our grubby hands on the Galaxy Note 2, and delivered our hands-on walkthrough — stay tuned for the full review!
Other major stories this week surround the launch of Sony's new flagship smartphone, the Xperia T, and rumors surrounding the HTC One X+, which is said to be a spec-bumped version of the earlier HTC flagship. And in Galaxy Note 2 launch news, we learned that the phone will be available a day early — tomorrow, Sept. 30, in fact — at Samsung's leading brand store in Stratford, London. Lucky consumers in South Korea have already had the chance to buy their version of the phone, which launched earlier in the week.
And in update news, the international Galaxy S3 finally started to get its Android 4.1 Jelly Bean updates, a little later than we expected. The S3 becomes the first non-Nexus device to receive Jelly Bean, though we're expecting more than a few new phones to ship with Android 4.1 out of the box over the coming month.
Next week promises to be busier than ever. Keep it locked to AC for more hands-on coverage, reviews and news!

Samsung Galaxy Note coming to UK on Oct. 1

Samsung has announced that its latest smartphone/tablet hybrid, the Galaxy Note 2, will land on British shores next Monday, Oct. 1. Like the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 10.1 before it, the Note 2 will be available first at the Samsung brand store at the Westfield shopping center in Stratford, London, as well as major UK networks, and independent retailers. That roughly fits with what we were hearing yesterday from Phones4U, which expects to fulfill Note 2 orders from Oct 2.
The Galaxy Note 2 will become the first major non-Nexus Android device to hit store shelves with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. And with a 1.6GHz quad-core Exynos CPU and 2GB of RAM, it's no slouch in terms of hardware specs either. Like its predecessor, the Note 2 comes with a Wacom-based Samsung "S Pen," which this time around has been redesigned for easier grip and better on-screen action. For more on the Galaxy Note 2, check out our hands-on coverage from IFA.
Samsung informs us that the Note 2 will be available in both marble white and titanium grey colors, so it looks like there'll be no waiting around for secondary color options, as was the case around Galaxy S3 launch time.
Anyone picking up a launch day Galaxy Note 2 in the UK? Hit the comments and let us know. We've got today's press release in full after the break.
Apple’s design team flies to London to receive awards

If you read or hear on the news something about Apple employees attending an event somewhere as a team, that is a shock, because nothing like that has ever happened. But recently, the Cupertino tech giant flew the entire Apple design team to London to receive a couple of prestigious awards.
Yes, the entire team was present at the D&AD (British Design & Art Direction) dinner at Evolution in Battersea Park a few days back as a team. The team consisted of 14 men and two women, who reportedly took the stage together to receive the two prestigious awards the company was awarded with. The decision to bring the entire team to the UK is described as a rare moment of public unity by The Next Web.
The D&AD event was organized to celebrate the 50th anniversary. And as a celebration, awards across various categories were presented to various companies. But Apple was the centre of attention for the evening. Tech Spot writes:
Cupertino received two awards during the event: one for being the best brand and the other for having the best design studio of the last 50 years. Needless to say, the D&AD certainly thinks highly of Apple. Names of everyone in attendance weren’t mentioned but we do know that 14 men and two women took the stage, including Apple’s senior vice president of industrial design Jony Ive. Ive reportedly received a standing ovation at the ceremony.
It is very surprising that the Cupertino tech giant flew the whole team out of the head quarters the same week the iPhone 5 is being released in the stores. Something like this would not have happened under the guidance of Steve Jobs. But I guess this will become more common under Tim Cook. Do you think Apple needs this kind of public attention?
Motorola announces Intel-powered RAZR i, launches in Europe next month
Motorola’s revealed the first smartphone to be borne from its team-up with Intel. Here in London, UK, it’s a familiar-looking Android smartphone with an important internal difference. The RAZR i will be running on one of Intel’s latest mobile chips (2GHz processor), differentiating it from what we saw from the Google-owned phone-maker a few weeks earlier. Motorola’s calling the phone its biggest launch in the UK since the original RAZR.
Motorola’s touting the (almost “edge-to-edge”) 4.3-inch AMOLED display, 2,000mAh of battery and the same Kevlar coating — it’s water repellent this time. But this event is also about Intel’s 2GHz processor inside. The chipmaker says it’s optimized the architecture for web browsing, especially for Java-based activities. It’s also pushing for power consumption even on processor-intensive activities like gaming — but we’ll have to wait for our own tests to check it out.
The RAZR i also packs a similar 8-megapixel camera and interface to those other new Motorola phones, with under a second start-up to get the camera app running — we bet that dedicated camera button helps there. Intel made similar promises with the Orange San Diego, but were already intrigued by that Vanilla-looking interface.
NFC is already baked in, with Android Beam taking control of what you need, while its bootloader arrives unlocked. The RAZR i appears to be packing some iteration of Android 4 — but we’re still checking on whether it’ll be coming with ICS or the newer Jelly Bean. The phone will arrive in the likes of UK, France, Germany and Brazil — but no news on whether it’ll appear inside North America’s borders. In the meantime, you’ll find a galley of pics below, plus a press release and publicity video right after the break.
Update: According to retailer Clove.co.uk stock should be arriving (in the UK at least) on October 1st, with a SIM-free price of £342 (about $555).
