Droid RAZR HD and MAXX HD Android 4.1.2 update is live

Droid RAZR HD and MAXX HD

Droid RAZR HD and MAXX HD owners have started receiving an update for their devices. This latest OTA will bump both versions of the RAZR HD to Android 4.1.2, and comes with security patches from Google and a fix for data roaming.

Multiple software improvements have also been made. Detection of USB cables has been improved, as has the devices' Wifi connectivity. Wallpaper options have been added when selecting home screen icons, and the camera app has had improvements made to its touch-to-focus, notifications, and low light performance. Headset connectivity is better, as is pixelation in video streaming. Media sync problems should also be gone, now that sync more stable.

Motorola: Jelly Bean Officially Rolling Out to DROID RAZR and MAXX in Phases

Motorola has officially announced that the Jelly Bean update for the DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX is rolling out to devices in phases. With the soak test underway, along with manual downloads making the rounds, we weren’t really expecting this announcement to come for a few days, or at least until the test had completed. [...]

Dan Rosenberg Blesses Droid RAZR/MAXX Users With Root For The ‘Unrootable’ Jelly Bean 4.1 OTA

drzr

Winning a $450 bounty and the hearts of Droid RAZR/MAXX users, Dan Rosenberg has found a successful root method for the phone’s 4.1 JellyBean OTA, which began rolling out last Christmas Eve.

Some readers are likely familiar with Mr. Rosenberg’s work, as he’s rooted everything in sight from the Droid RAZR/MAXX HD to the RAZR M, all the way back to the LG Spectrum. As a security researcher, he’s even given (and published) a helpful presentation on rooting and modding for the security conscious.

Not only can Droid RAZR/MAXX owners now root their Jelly Bean powered handsets, they can do it with ease – the process is as simple as connecting the phone and running a .bat file.

Motorola says Jelly Bean coming to all Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX users in Q1 2013

After a select group of Motorola Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX users received a Christmas gift in the form of Android 4.1.2, the update ceased without explanation. We can’t say for sure why Motorola halted the software upgrade, but we now have confirmation that Motorola plans to deliver Jelly Bean to all users of the RAZR and RAZR MAXX sometime in Q1 of this year.

The news was posted to the comments section of a post touting Jelly Bean for the Droid RAZR M on the Motorola Facebook page. No specifics were offered as to when exactly in Q1 we can expect to see the Android 4.1 update begin anew. We’re in Q1 now, so Jelly Bean could touch down as soon as tomorrow or as late as March. Let’s hope the latter isn’t the case.

If a major bug was discovered at the last minute, it could be a while before we see the update reach handsets. On the other hand, if the software only needed a few minor tweaks expect it much sooner.

The top game changing Android devices of 2012

The holiday fun is over and we’re officially kicking off 2013 with a quick rundown of some of the top smartphones and tablets to rock the past year. There was multiple “flagship” devices that arrived this year from multiple manufacturers but we all know who the true champ was, and that’s Samsung. Read on to see what made the Android Community list.

first-540x355

This was an excellent year for Android. Another strong push showing the mobile world, developers, and manufacturers just how awesome Android and its following really is. As expected Samsung was the clear winner for 2012. They rocked out on all fronts when it comes to smartphones so to start off our list meet the Galaxy S III.

Samsung Galaxy S III
The flagship Samsung Galaxy S III is exactly how Android smartphones should be done. OS and TouchWiz user interface changes aside Samsung released a powerhouse smartphone with nearly the latest version of Android, and released the same device on all carriers. We wish this trend would pick up with other devices (read: Nexus) and surely won’t stop at the GSIII from Samsung.

Samsung-galaxy-S-III

Samsung’s Galaxy S III was clearly the absolute best seller in the world of Android, or in general for that matter. With more than 30 million sales strong, and more continuing daily it’s safe to say the Galaxy S III was by far the biggest and most successful smartphone to date. It came out early and in the US dropped the quad-core for a dual-core Snapdragon processor and 4G LTE, but it still is rocking out and shows no signs of slowing down. Until the Galaxy S IV rumors start flowing in of course. Thanks to the 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display, 2GB of RAM, and Android 4.0 ICS out of the gate this was an awesome smartphone.

Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX HD
Next on our list would have to be a RAZR. Not just any RAZR, but the MAXX HD for that massive 3,300 mAh battery, 4.7-inch display, dual-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and awesome Kevlar coated durable design. Motorola showed the Android world that amazing battery life can be achieved without using extended batteries or huge cases.

main-razr-540x405

In 2013 we expect many manufacturers to take a similar approach and start offering devices that won’t be called the “world’s thinnest” but instead have impressive all-day battery life and beyond. I’ll gladly have an extra millimeter or three in return for 48 hours of heavy usage. Get with the program HTC. Now that Google is at the helm of Motorola we’re all hopeful for a RAZR Nexus. Give me a 4.7-inch 1080p quad-core smartphone with Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie and a 3,500 mAh battery and I’ll never complain again. We’re extremely excited to see how Motorola takes their direction in 2013.

LG Optimus G
LG’s flagship Optimus G is an extremely impressive smartphone. Sadly it came to market just a little too late to try and steal some of Samsung’s fire, but they’re still doing extremely well with that beast of a smartphone. Being the first Snapdragon S4 Pro 1.5 GHz quad-core smartphone from LG, and in the US, the Optimus G hit the market running. With a 13 megapixel camera, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, 2GB of RAM and an awesomely bright display this phone had to make the cut.

Screen-Shot-2012-10-22-at-1.59.50-PM-540x333

LG’s software is still slightly lacking. With their Optimus UI 3.0 being slightly improved over previous years, they’re still not updating quite as fast as we’d like. No matter how amazing the hardware, Android faithful want timely updates. If LG can get that up to par in 2013 they’ll continue to gain ground in the smartphone wars.

Google Nexus 7
We had to throw a tablet in here, and none is more deserving than the ASUS Nexus 7. It hit the market in June after Google I/O and showed everyone, not just Android fans, that an impressive tablet doesn’t have to cost $499. With a 1280 x 800 HD display, quad-core processor, and the latest and greatest mobile OS in the world all for $199.

3T8A95431-540x36011

The Nexus 7 needs no introduction, no explanation, and no argument as to why you should buy it. For $199 the 16GB Nexus 7 is an absolute steal and the perfect tablet. Get the 3G HSPA+ model for portability if need be. We are excited for the future in this regard as well. While Google’s not known for follow up devices (like a Nexus 7 2) we can expect a similar but greater product sometime around the middle of 2013. Exciting times folks. Exciting times!

HTC DROID DNA
HTC’s new and flagship device hit late this year, but came out with a huge bang. Rocking the first of its kind 5-inch 1920 x 1080p full HD display with over 400 pixels-per-inch. Being truly a retina smashing device. Pair that with a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB of RAM, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and more this was HTC’s strongest looking device of the year.

P1090311-540x303

Obviously their biggest device of the year was the HTC One X, which deserves a mention, but the DROID DNA marks a new market for Android and has everyone else playing catch up. 2013 will be all about quad-core smartphones with large 1080p HD displays and more, and HTC’s already beat many to the punch. Sadly, as mentioned above, its battery could use some help and hopefully the DNA 2 arrives quickly with a 3,000 mAh battery or more. Look forward to devices from all major carriers trying to match and top the DROID DNA.

LG Nexus 4
To start here, the Galaxy Nexus should make this list since it was one of the biggest devices of the year — by far. However it was released in 2011 so we’ll only give it an honorable mention. While it was later in the year, Google and LG’s Nexus 4 marks a new era for Android. That era being powerhouse quad-core smartphones for $299 without a contract.

nexus_hero2-540x358411122

Sadly this device has been riddled with small issues with the durability of the back, not to mention being sold out everywhere and literally out of reach for hundreds of thousands of potential buyers — it’s still been highly popular. 2013 will be a big year for this device, as we’re not expecting another Nexus smartphone for at least 4-6 months, possibly not until the end of the year. The Nexus 4 obviously gets brownie points for being pure Google. It’ll have the latest and greatest software updates, all the time, and will be on the cutting edge for years to come. Good luck trying to buy one from Google though.

Samsung Galaxy Note II
We debated tossing this smartphone in the list, but it certainly deserves to be here. The Samsung Galaxy Note II rocks a 5.5-inch HD display, a quad-core processor, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box, oh and a massive 3,100 mAh battery. The S-Pen suite of apps only completes this masterpiece.

P1100964-540x405

The sheer size of the device will turn some off (me included) but for the millions that have already purchased it, and the original, it’s a clear sign that Samsung shouldn’t slow down. And they aren’t. In fact, there is already rumors of a 6.3-inch Galaxy Note III coming sometime soon this year. We’ll be on the lookout for multiple manufacturers trying to mirror their success. Huawei has a 6.1-inch device, and I’m sure we’ll see plenty more in 2013.

Obviously Android had record numbers in 2012, and this year will be even better. It surpassed iOS and Apple as the number one mobile OS in the world, and surely will add to that lead all year long. There was way too many devices to list them all but we wanted to give a few more honorable mentions. The ASUS Transformer Prime was one of the best tablets of the year even though it was released in December of 2011, but had a huge play in the Android tablet scene all year long. The HTC One X+ is worth mentioning simply for the fact that NVIDIA added 4G LTE to their quad-core processor, and we’re expecting huge things from team green in 2013.

tegra_htc_one_x-580x416-540x387

Last but not least we again wanted to shout out Motorola’s DROID RAZR M. While it was exclusive to Verizon (and US Cellular) in the US, this 4.3-inch edge-to-edge display rocking dual-core 4G LTE powered smartphone was only $99. Motorola made a great device and now with Google helping out things will only get better. It’s nice to see excellent devices hit the “entry level” pricing we’ve always loved. Expect much, much more of that in 2013.

What was your favorite device of 2012? Let us know below. Have a great year everyone and check out a few fun posts below!

Motorola Jelly Bean updates will continue in Q1 2013

Motorola has been pretty good about keeping users up to date in terms of which devices were being upgraded and when those updates could be expected to begin rolling out. Granted, that is not to say they have been the fastest to update, but more that they have offered a regularly updated “Software Upgrade News” page.

android-jelly-bean-logo-540x289

That being the case, Motorola has recently updated that page and added a few new devices to the Jelly Bean update list. Those newly added devices include the Electrify M XT901 (with US Cellular) as well as the RAZR HD XT925 (in Canada), the RAZR M (in Australia) and the RAZR i XT890 (in Europe). These four devices are all set to begin the update process in the first quarter of 2013. Specific release dates were not given, which just means that we will begin looking towards the carrier for dates.

Otherwise, the previous status update arrived from Motorola earlier in the month when we learned that the Atrix HD was going to be updated. And well, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean has rolled-out for AT&T users. We have also recently seen Motorola and Verizon Wireless roll-out Jelly Bean for the RAZR M and RAZR HD (in November). We had also seen some reports in terms of an update for the RAZR MAXX and DROID RAZR (in December), however that was since pulled and the current status for those handsets is a generic sounding “will be upgraded to Jelly Bean.”

And while it would have been nicer to see more than these four new devices get an upcoming Jelly Bean update timeline, we suppose we can also look at the other side — we didn’t see any devices taken off the list. Finally, some other devices worth keeping an eye on include the PHOTON Q, Electrify 2, XT886, Droid 4 and Droid Bionic smartphones which are on the list for Jelly Bean, but similar to the RAZR MAXX and DROID RAZR, have yet to get any sort of timeframe.

Custom ROMs for your Alltel RAZR MAXX are just a flash away

Razr Maxx

Verizon may take most of the headlines, but the Motorola RAZR MAXX (sans Droid) also made it's way to other carriers — like Alltel. We love seeing the smaller carriers getting great Android phones like the MAXX, but folks who want to run a custom ROM are usually out of luck when this happens. Not so this time.

Forum Moderator, Alltel subscriber, and Android hacker cole2kb has you covered. He has taken the most popular ICS and Jelly Bean custom ROMs for the Verizon version of the RAZR MAXX and ported them over to Alltel. Getting them installed is as easy as flashing the original ROM and a small patch from recovery. He's even figured out how to get MMS working, so you're set there.

This is why we love Android. Users getting their hands dirty to bring more options to the folks who want them. Thanks, Chris — and I'm sure plenty of folks on Alltel are thankful as well. Click the link below to get started.

Got ROMs? Flashable ZIPs for your Alltel MAXX!

Motorola DROID RAZR M coming in HD flavor?

The Motorola DROID RAZR M was a bit underwhelming when it was announced earlier this year, but it was never a bad device. In fact, the main complaint against it was the fact that the display wasn’t HD. Instead it launched with qHD resolution, and it was placed onto Verizon’s store shelves at the mid-range point.

It seems that might not have been enough for the OEM and carrier, though, as an HD variant is said to be in the works. PhoneArena picked up on the news from an unnamed source, and even has a nice, long list of specs for us to go over.

The device will reportedly house a 4.5 inch 720p display which gives us an astounding 326 ppi, a 3,300mAh battery which should give up to 21 hours of talk time, a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 Plus processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and more.

If all this sounds too familiar, the it’s probably because it sounds an awful lot like a DROID RAZR MAXX HD. The battery certainly matches that device’s capabilities, we’re looking at the same chipset, and aside from the rumored DROID RAZR M HD being .2 inches smaller it should house many of the same components. We can’t be too sure what the motive for this refresh is with the base RAZR series already out there, but we’re not mad to be getting more options at all.

We have no idea when Motorola would be bringing the device out, but it’s quick turnaround for a simple refresh. The original RAZR M was released in September so a turnaround time of less than half a year would be insane. Heck, anything short of 10 months would be ridiculous.

That said, it’s just a rumor so there’s not much sense in putting a ton of stock into it. A word of advice, though: if this excites you then just go ahead and get yourself a RAZR MAXX HD because it’s almost the exact same device as far as internals go.

Original DROID RAZR and MAXX get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update

For those proud owners of the original Motorola DROID RAZR or the RAZR MAXX we have some excellent news for you this afternoon. The folks from Verizon and Motorola nicely surprised everyone this holiday season by sending out the update to Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean on Christmas morning. If you didn’t get too many gifts, this should be one to enjoy.

topperwtmk-540x2731

Multiple reports surfaced that Christmas morning Verizon started sending out the update to 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, which is newer than even the DROID RAZR HD Jelly Bean, and we’ve had multiple confirmations that it indeed is rolling out. It appears that Verizon or Motorola might have flipped the switch early, because later in the evening the updates started failing and it may have been pulled.

Verizon usually posts the update changelog and details on their support page, which has yet to happen, but the update is up and running again. For those rocking the original DROID RAZR this is quite the surprise and a nice little gift from Motorola and Verizon — to say the least.

Jelly Bean brings that new keyboard, Google Now voice actions, and of course the informational and detailed expandable notifications are a welcomed edition. You won’t get those on-screen navigation buttons, but you’ll be able to enjoy everything else from Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. Now we’re just waiting for Verizon to allow the Galaxy Nexus to receive a similar update. Or possible 4.2 since all the others are already enjoying that. As usual the update should hit your RAZR soon, or feel free to head into settings and check for updates yourself under the “about phone” section. Happy Holidays!

Video: Quick Look at Jelly Bean on the Original DROID RAZR

Over the long weekend, Motorola began to push a Jelly Bean update to the original DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX as build 98.72.8. We’re assuming this was a mistake, as the update was killed a couple of hours after it went live, even though a number of users were able to pull it. Verizon and [...]

Original Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX receiving Jelly Bean OTA update

Droid RAZR OTA Droid RAZR OTA 2

It's a Christmas Eve miracle! Seemingly out of nowhere, the original Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX are pulling down an OTA update to Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. Several different users in our forums are reporting that their handsets are (often slowly) downloading a very large update, and being greeted with Jelly Bean goodness when they reboot. We don't have any official support documentation from Verizon yet, but it doesn't get much more official than updates currently being downloaded.

So are any of you seeing the update hit the notification bar of your RAZR or RAZR MAXX? Head to the forums and let us know.

OG Droid RAZR (And MAXX) Gets Jolly With Jelly Bean As Users Report A Surprise Update (98.72.8) Rolls Out

droidrazrIt may not be all that often that a phone over a year old will still be getting many updates, but lo and behold, it’s a Festivus miracle. Users are reporting that the original Droid RAZR/RAZR MAXX is currently seeing an update roll out to Jelly Bean (4.1.2) right now. And to think, this phone launched with Gingerbread.

razrjbupdate1 razrjbupdate2

The update is 331.7MB, so you’ll want to get on WiFi before you start the download. Once it’s installed your system version will be bumped to 98.72.8, and Jelly Bean will be all yours, and everything that entails, including Google Now, Project Butter, and all the fancy new voice search options.

Motorola DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX getting Android Jelly Bean OTA? Not so Fast

RAZR OTAIt is a Christmas miracle. Well, not really. Verizon apparently started to push out an OTA update to the Motorola DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX. The update is being reported as taking your devices to Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean.  Talk about an awesome early present, if it worked. Looks like it is being met with various issues though. Plenty of people are getting “update suspended” and “download failed” messages. Many after letting their device sit for as long as 1.5 hours. What’s worse, is that after it fails, if you check for updates again the device reports that it is “up to date.”

Not sure what happened there. Either someone goofed bad and pushed it to the servers to early and then recalled it, or there is a serious delivery issue going on. Seems Verizon is telling people to call Motorola and Motorola isn’t aware of an OTA rolling out. We saw a few people say they snagged it and installed it, but we assume those were the ones that snuck in before things got reversed.

Did any of our readers get it installed before all the failures started happening? If so, is it running smoothly or is it loaded with issues?

Limited edition red DROID DNA for Verizon employees pictured

Verizon has been making a habit of offering special edition DROIDs to their employees. A few months ago, it was the DROID RAZR HD / RAZR MAXX HD, and now the DROID DNA gets the same treatment. As you can see the back is the same color red as the side grills that are on the normal retail model. It’s pretty cool looking, but might be a little too loud. If you’re looking to get your hands on one of these, you might want to check out eBay since you won’t find them in stores. A couple of more pictures after the break.

Android 4.1 Now Rolling Out To The Motorola Atrix HD On AT&T

thumb

As of late, it’s been apparent that Motorola has been trying to make good on its promises of offering more timely updates. The RAZR M was the first to get its bump to Jelly Bean, and was followed by the RAZR/MAXX HD. Now, it’s the Atrix HD’s turn.

Beginning today, AT&T and Motorola are pushing the Android 4.1 OTA to the device, which brings a handful of improvements over ICS, including Google Now, Project Butter for speed improvements, and enhanced notifications. Of course, Motorola has thrown some tweaks of its own into the mix, as well – like Drive Smart, Quick Settings, and more.

Tip: Check the “Rooted” Status on Your DROID RAZR HD

Back in August, we talked about a root checker that Motorola had built into devices like the RAZR and RAZR MAXX. To see if a device was rooted or had been rooted in the past, all you had to do was boot into recovery and look towards the middle of the screen for “qe” in [...]

Motorola attacks Samsung in latest ad campaign

In this day and age you pretty much expect the likes of Samsung, HTC, Motorola and others to attack Apple — and vice versa — but it’s become a bit taboo to see the aforementioned Android-loving OEMs attacking each other. Well, Motorola’s taking the charge against the biggest Android player in the game.

The OEM has gone after Samsung in its latest advertising efforts, though don’t expect a fifth round knockout type of scenario here (sorry, Pacquiao). This episode is a bit more mild than that, but no less interesting. Motorola claims “it’s not easy downloading from another galaxy” on its Facebook page, boldly displaying a Galaxy S3 trying to get through a download of Angry Birds Rio while the Motorola DROID RAZR HD already has it installed.

The image used to portray this suggests the Galaxy S3 only gets half signal bars while the Motorola RAZR enjoys full strength signal bars at any given time, but that is terribly misleading, no? For starters, location location location — that plays a bigger part in signal strength and download speeds over 4G LTE even if Motorola’s radios happen to be more solid than the ones Samsung use (though these two use virtually the same circuitry so we’re not sure what to make of that one).

It’s no surprise Motorola didn’t publish how it came about this particular result. The OEM could have tested the Galaxy S3 in a low coverage area, then proceeded to perform the same test on a RAZR MAXX HD in a full coverage area. We wouldn’t know that, of course, because Motorola is not required to tell us, but more power to them if they can get a few more sales out of it. And although Motorola’s image doesn’t show any branding, the simulated software image certainly suggests they’re comparing this to the version of the S3 that’s on the very carrier that has exclusive DROID RAZR MAXX HD rights — Verizon.

Motorola took things a tad further on its website, though the marketing plan there is less tricky than the one they deployed on Facebook. They claimed that the RAZR MAXX HD has 20% more battery life than the Galaxy S3 — this is true as the MAXX HD has a 3,300mAh battery compared to the S3′s 2,100mAh battery. They also boast the MAXX HD’s superior build quality — can’t really get mad at that with all the Kevlar sitting on the back of this thing.

Finally, overall innovation and impressive design are touted over the Galaxy S3, though this is highly subjective and we’d argue that Samsung’s S3 is in the same class as the DROID RAZR MAXX HD in this regard.

We can’t say what compelled Motorola to get a bit more bold in its marketing tactics, but we kind of like it. Even though the speed claims are a bit fishy they do have a couple of points over Samsung’s Galaxy S3. Sure, Samsung has another device that completely outclasses any of the RAZR devices, but the Samsung Galaxy S3 is still Samsung’s primary bread and butter and Motorola has no problem letting you know that it has a device that can stand toe to toe with it. What do you guys think?
