Google Issues Refunds And An Extra $5 Play Store Credit To Android Users Who Bought The Phony ‘Virus Shield’ App

unnamed (1)One of the more far-reaching Android Police stories this year was our exclusive write-up of Virus Shield, an impressively popular anti-virus app that managed to make it to the top of the Play Store’s sales charts in less than a week, despite the fact that it did absolutely nothing. After digging into the app’s code, Artem Russakovskii and various Android Police readers found that it was nothing more than a few images and a toggle.

U.S. Cellular Galaxy S5 up for pre-order tomorrow as well, comes with a $50 Play Store credit

Galaxy S5

Following AT&T’s announcement of the Samsung Galaxy S5 on pre-order, America’s fifth largest carrier U.S. Cellular has followed suit with its variant up for pre-order starting tomorrow as well. However, customers getting a device via U.S. Cellular will have the added bonus of getting a free $50 Google Play Store credit to spend on apps and other content.

Pricing will be the same at $199.99 with a two year contract, which is what all carrier variants will sell for, so no surprises there. But unlike AT&T, U.S. Cellular doesn’t offer monthly installment schemes, so you’re either going to sign a two year agreement or get the device off contract by paying the full price up front.

The carrier will offer an early preview of the smartphone for interested customers in its stores at Cedar Rapids, Iowa as well as Madison, Milwaukee and Glendale in Wisconsin. Customers can head over to a nearby U.S. Cellular outlet starting from the 24th of March to play around with the Galaxy S5 and get a better idea of its functioning. Official availability is slated to commence on the 11th of April which is when all the other carriers and the world markets are getting it as well.

U.S. Cellular will sell the Gear 2 smartwatch for $299 along with the Gear 2 Neo and the Gear Fit for $199.

Google offering free shipping and $25 Play Store credit with 2013 Nexus 7

Nexus 7Google has kicked off a decent holiday season promotion where it is offering free shipping and $25 Play Store credit for buyers of the 2013 Nexus 7 tablet. The promotion will probably last for a week or at least until this weekend, so make sure you buy up right away if you were planning to gift this to your loved ones.

The tablet is certainly one of the best value for money devices right now and this deal makes it even sweeter. At $229, the tablet was considered slightly expensive compared to its predecessor, but getting a $25 credit to spend on apps, movies or any content on the Play Store along with the tablet is as sweet as a deal can get. Also, the money you save on shipping can be used elsewhere. So it’s all in good holiday spirit and much commendable from Google. As we mentioned earlier, it’s very unlikely that the offer will last until the holidays, so hit the source link below to make your holiday shopping a little easier. In the meanwhile, you can check out our list of tablets sold under the Black Friday promotion.

Samsung offering $50 Play Store credit for buyers of the Galaxy Note 3

Galaxy Note 3 Play Store Credit

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has been a phenomenal success for the company ever since its launch in late September followed by the American release in early October. But we’re already heading into the holiday season, which is a time when manufacturers try to do everything they can to boost sales of their respective smartphones. And that’s exactly what Samsung is doing with its new Galaxy Note 3 promotion, where it is giving away a free $50 Google Play Store credit to anybody who merely purchases or already owns the smartphone. All the users have to do is head over to a website, input the smartphone’s credentials (IMEI, mobile number etc) and they’ll instantly receive a $50 credit to spend on content, apps or books of their choice on the Play Store.

This promotion is limited to the U.S. for now and will be available till the 6th of January. So there’s still plenty of time left to get your free $50 credit. Shortly after users input their credentials, they will receive an email confirming the legitimacy of the information submitted and the Play Store credit will reflect on their primary Google account. Head over to the link below and try it out if you own a Galaxy Note 3 in the U.S.

Google Opinion Rewards pays you in Play Store credit to take surveys

Google Opinion Rewards

Answer a question, pay for that in-app purchase in Candy Crush

The Google Opinion Rewards app has just launched in the Play Store, and it may be a good way to build up your Play Store credit balance. The idea isn't new — after you download the app, you'll occasionally be asked to answer a handful of questions, and you'll be rewarded with money to spend on apps, movies, books and music in the Play Store.

Google says the surveys will show up about once a week, and you'll be notified on your phone when a survey is ready to be answered. The questions will be simple and range from things like "Which logo is best?" to "When do you plan on traveling next?" The app is currently U.S.-only, and it isn't clear how much Play Store credit you'll get for answering each survey.

You can download the app (from the Play Store link above) right now and answer a few questions about yourself, and then wait for the first real surveys to come in.

The Google Play Store Now Allows You To Buy Play Store Credit Directly From The Web

gplay_logo_g

Google has just introduced a brand-new feature on the Play Store that’s sure to be useful to many people – Play Store credit is now purchasable directly through the Play Store site. You can find the new option at the bottom of any Play Storage page, near the “Buy Gift Card” link.

At this point, we’re not sure how many countries have this option enabled, but this is undoubtedly a lot easier than heading down to your local Target and picking up a physical Play Store gift card, introduced back in August, if you don’t actually need to. Buying straight from the web is probably especially cool for parents with children who own Android devices.
