Motorola: DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX Jelly Bean update rolling out today

Well that was fast. Earlier today some reports came flooding in that Motorola was finally sending out limited beta test builds of Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean for the original and aging DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX. Now just a few short hours later Motorola themselves have confirmed the real update will arrive starting today to all RAZR owners. It’s about time!

Screen Shot 2013-03-07 at 12.22.21 PM

So for those who’d rather not mess with downloading files and flashing things in their recovery, just hang out for a minute because the official update is rolling out in phases as of this afternoon.

Motorola Droid RAZR and RAZR Maxx get updated to Android 4.1

Motorola Droid RAZR and RAZR Maxx get updated to Android 41

Today is the day for Jelly Bean updates on older carrier-branded devices, apparently. In this round, it’s the Verizon-branded Motorola Droid RAZR and RAZR Maxx that have the honor of being bestowed with Google Now, expanded notifications and the rest of everything Android 4.1 has to offer. The rollout will take place in phases, so don’t be terribly concerned if you don’t see the update showing up on your device right away. We haven’t had the chance to play with it yet, but soak tests seemed to indicate that much of the Droid-related bloatware has been removed in favor of several stock Google apps; if you get the update, let us know in the comments if this is the case.

Motorola makes the Droid RAZR/MAXX Jelly Bean OTA official

Droid RAZR

We had some pretty interesting information regarding a Jelly Bean soak test for the original Motorola Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX, and now Motorola has made the update official. The support page has just gone up indicating that the update will be rolling out in phases, as is usually the case. There's no specific note about the removal of the Motorola apps and being replaced by stock Google apps, but this looks to be the same update that we were seeing before.

It’s been a long time coming, but Motorola today officially announced that the Android 4.1 (aka Jelly Bean) update for the DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX will be rolling out in phases soon. The update brings all the Android 4.1 trimmings you may have already come to know and love, like Google Now, enhanced rich notifications, and more.

RAZR_jellybean_announcement

This update is also supposedly heavily de-bloated in terms of Moto’s old don’t-call-it-BLUR software suite, with many apps having been replaced with their Google-made counterparts. Here’s Motorola’s detailed changelog:

New User Interface

  • Look and Feel: Updated colors, font, icons, and animations.

New Features

  • Google Now: Added feature that generates real-time notifications throughout the day with relevant, contextual information such as weather, traffic, calendar.

Custom ROMs for your Alltel RAZR MAXX are just a flash away

Razr Maxx

Verizon may take most of the headlines, but the Motorola RAZR MAXX (sans Droid) also made it's way to other carriers — like Alltel. We love seeing the smaller carriers getting great Android phones like the MAXX, but folks who want to run a custom ROM are usually out of luck when this happens. Not so this time.

Forum Moderator, Alltel subscriber, and Android hacker cole2kb has you covered. He has taken the most popular ICS and Jelly Bean custom ROMs for the Verizon version of the RAZR MAXX and ported them over to Alltel. Getting them installed is as easy as flashing the original ROM and a small patch from recovery. He's even figured out how to get MMS working, so you're set there.

This is why we love Android. Users getting their hands dirty to bring more options to the folks who want them. Thanks, Chris — and I'm sure plenty of folks on Alltel are thankful as well. Click the link below to get started.

Over the long weekend, Motorola began to push a Jelly Bean update to the original DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX as build 98.72.8. We’re assuming this was a mistake, as the update was killed a couple of hours after it went live, even though a number of users were able to pull it. Verizon and [...]

Original Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX receiving Jelly Bean OTA update

Droid RAZR OTA Droid RAZR OTA 2

It's a Christmas Eve miracle! Seemingly out of nowhere, the original Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX are pulling down an OTA update to Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. Several different users in our forums are reporting that their handsets are (often slowly) downloading a very large update, and being greeted with Jelly Bean goodness when they reboot. We don't have any official support documentation from Verizon yet, but it doesn't get much more official than updates currently being downloaded.

So are any of you seeing the update hit the notification bar of your RAZR or RAZR MAXX? Head to the forums and let us know.

Motorola DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX getting Android Jelly Bean OTA? Not so Fast

RAZR OTAIt is a Christmas miracle. Well, not really. Verizon apparently started to push out an OTA update to the Motorola DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX. The update is being reported as taking your devices to Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean.  Talk about an awesome early present, if it worked. Looks like it is being met with various issues though. Plenty of people are getting “update suspended” and “download failed” messages. Many after letting their device sit for as long as 1.5 hours. What’s worse, is that after it fails, if you check for updates again the device reports that it is “up to date.”

Not sure what happened there. Either someone goofed bad and pushed it to the servers to early and then recalled it, or there is a serious delivery issue going on. Seems Verizon is telling people to call Motorola and Motorola isn’t aware of an OTA rolling out. We saw a few people say they snagged it and installed it, but we assume those were the ones that snuck in before things got reversed.

Did any of our readers get it installed before all the failures started happening? If so, is it running smoothly or is it loaded with issues?

Original DROID RAZR Receiving Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean Build 98.72.8 (Updated)

According to a number of readers with the original RAZR and RAZR MAXX, a massive update weighing in at 331MB and build number 98.72.8 is pushing out. There are no signs of an official update going out from any of the regular spots, so we aren’t sure if this is Jelly Bean, and someone at [...]

Verizon’s limited edition Droid DNA puts the company colors in employees’ hands

Verizon's limited edition Droid DNA puts company colors in employees' hands

There are more perks to being a Verizon employee than just discounted phone plans — like limited edition versions of the carrier’s hottest handsets. Much like it did for the Droid RAZR and RAZR Maxx, Verizon’s gearing up to offer its staffers a special, red-backed version of the Droid DNA that adheres strictly to the company’s signature colors. Apart from the obvious red and black cosmetic change, each phone is set to ship with a serial number denoting its exclusivity and type on the back marking it as a “Verizon Employee Limited Edition.” According to DroidLife, these one-offs have already begun to enter into circulation. So, don’t be surprised if you see any related listings surfacing on eBay in the near future.

Jelly Bean ready for Verizon’s Droid RAZR HD/RAZR MAXX HD

The Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for Verizon’s Motorola Droid RAZR HD and Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX HD has been approved. The proof is in the support documents that have just gone live on Big Red’s site. The new software version will bring about several new features including actionable notifications, improved voice search, and Jelly Bean’s improved keyboard. You also get access to Google Now and its system of helpful, predictive cards.

The Droid RAZR handsets launched earlier this fall with Ice Cream Sandwich and both feature a similar array of hardware. The LTE devices sport a 4.7-inch display, dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, and 8MP camera. The biggest difference is the larger battery found in the RAZR MAXX HD.

An update to the latest branch of Android should give smartphone shoppers another reason to consider the handsets this holiday season. With approval from Verizon, it should only be a matter of days before Android 4.1 begins rolling out to users.
