Contest: Win 1 of 4 Nexus 7 (2013) Official Google Play Sleeves

Yesterday, we took a belated look at the official Sleeve for the 2013 Nexus 7, since it has temporarily dropped from its steep $30 price tag. In case you missed that review, we actually love the damn thing. It’s beautifully designed, uses premium materials, and fits the Nexus 7 like a glove. It also comes in four beautiful colors, all of which we have on-hand to giveaway today. That’s right, since we told you not to buy this sleeve back in August when it first became available, it only seems fitting that we hand them out to a few of you for free.

This Sleeve, along with a handful of other Nexus accessories, are on sale for a limited time through Google Play at 25% off. You can find the Nexus 7′s Folio (which we wouldn’t recommend) and Case, along with the Bumper (another we wouldn’t recommend) and QuickCover for the Nexus 5.

Archos To Release New Tablet That’s Basically An iPad Because Why Not?

archos_97titanium_office_hidef_5

I could tell you about the Archos 97 Premium’s features. It’s specifications. The version of Android it’s running. How much it might cost. But honestly, Archos has made it a near certainty that no one will remotely care about any of these things, because of the 97 Premium’s decidedly interesting design. Let me just do a little side by side for you.

archos_97titanium_front_hidef_2  iPad_PFV_PFVLF_Springboard_PRINT

Is the 97 Premium an iPad? No. Is it so obviously meant to draw comparisons to the iPad that it borders on something I’d expect out of a fly-by-night Chinese manufacturer? Definitely.

Archos has, however, been careful to avoid a couple key design trademarks of Apple’s tablet.

Google: Oct. 29 in NYC, the playground is open

Google: The Playground is Open

Fresh in our inbox: An invite to an Oct. 29 event in New York City. "The playground is open," Google says.

The general consensus is that we'll see some sort of new Nexus device. Maybe several. At the very least, that LG guy that's been floating around. Maybe something from Sony. Me? I think Google's got something up its sleeve.

We'll see you there at 10 a.m. Eastern Monday morning. And you're coming with us. Google's streaming the event at Youtube.com/Android.

Amazon Phone Reportedly Being Announced Tomorrow Alongside New Kindle Fire and E-Reader

This image has no alt text

Tomorrow, Amazon will mostly announce their brand new Kindle Fire and Kindle e-readers to the world. But if you though that was all they had up their sleeve, wait until you hear this. According to sources at The Verge, it seems Amazon could have something their very own “one more thing” moment planned for tomorrow’s press event and will involved the unveiling of a Kindle phone.

Sources say the device is still very early but will run on the same modified Android 4.0 OS as its bigger brother. With that, we can’t be sure sure if they will have a hands-on with the device, or if it will remain behind glass.

We wont have to wait much longer to find out. I’ll be up bright and early tomorrow morning bringing you guys the latest of what I admittedly thought was going to be a snooze-fest. Now, with the possibility of a Kindle Phone… things just got interesting.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 Book Cover, dock, and cases coming soon [Hands-on]

In case you missed the news this afternoon, Samsung just officially announced their Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet — available tomorrow August 16th. We’ve seen plenty of it, and now it’s finally going to be available for everyone. As usual, Samsung has just detailed an entire line of impressive accessories to go along with it. From a “book cover” that doubles as a stand and more. Check them out below.

First we’ll start with that neat looking case they are calling a Book Cover. It isn’t a smart case and doesn’t have any magnets, but the origami-like folding allows this cover to quickly become a stand. With easy to view multiple viewing modes too. Simple fold it the right way and you’re off. Take a peek below.

IMG_6255
IMG_6256

Then they’ve also prepared a custom dock for their Galaxy Note 10.1. We are still waiting for more details but this durable, and solid feeling dock easily clicks into the 30-pin connector below, and will charge the tablet at the same time. While it isn’t a “smart dock” with HDMI out, they do provide stereo outputs for streaming music or enhancing audio. If fits snug and holds the Note 10.1 securely even while tapping away with the S-Pen as you can see from our video reviews.

Then last but certainly not least is a sleek and lightweight Galaxy Note 10.1 Sleeve protector too. This is made out of what feels like Pleather, and has a soft-touch microfiber lining to protect that beautiful 10.1-inch screen. As you can see from the pictures of the sleeve, and all the other accessories below Samsung is prepared to offer a little of everything. We’ve seen a lot of their accessories never make it to shelves, but hopefully that isn’t the case here. We’ll update once we know availability dates and pricing.

BlueAnt V1x Bluetooth headset review

blueant V1x

The BlueAnt V1x is a moderately priced “basic” headset with a few tricks up its sleeve.

Since many of us live in places that make talking on the phone or text illegal (we already know it is dumb and dangerous) investing in a Bluetooth headset is more of necessity than a luxury.  Read on to see if this is the right headset for you.

The Nexus 7 Has One More Trick Up Its Sleeve: A Magnetic Smart Cover Sensor

wm_IMG_2353

You thought you knew everything there was to know about the Nexus 7? Well, you thought wrong. A curious owner of the device started doing what any totally rational person does with a brand-new tablet: expose it to magnetic forces. The results yielded an as-yet hidden feature in the Nexus 7, in the form a magnetic smart cover sensor. Simply take a magnet and put it up against the front or back of your Nexus 7 along the bottom left-hand side while in portrait mode with the display on, and you can see the effect for yourself. Or, you could just watch this video of our tipster doing it:

While Google does sell covers for the Nexus 7, it’s unclear if they support this feature (though ASUS does call it a “smart cover” here).

Official Android Police t-shirts are now on sale, with over 25 designs to call yours.

FreedomPop Sleeve wants to spread ‘free’ WiMAX love in the form of a $99 iPhone case

Image

Life, Liberty and the pursuit of free WiMAX? According to FreedomPop, yeah, that seems to be the deal. The outfit, started by one of Skype’s co-founders, is peddling $99 WiMAX-equipped iPhone cases that share up to 500MB of free data per month via an embedded WiFi module. The case also extends battery life by six hours and enables FaceTime everywhere you go. FreedomPop Sleeve rumors have been circling the net since December, but now the company is taking things to the next level by officially accepting pre-orders for a launch some time after July 1st. It seems that the company intends to get you hooked on free data in the hopes of selling you premium features later on, such as a VoIP tool and a $0.01 charge per megabyte over the monthly data limit. There’s a video of the device in action after the break.

Acer Unveils Its CloudMobile Smartphone

Acer is set to make a splash for 2012 by formally unveiling its CloudMobile smartphone. This attractive device was recently awarded as the winner of the IF design award— an award in the recognition of outstanding achievement in design. As you can see, the phone has a very slim profile, strutting its stuff in a 4.3-inch profile. Also, the smooth and glossy screen will display glorious HD. Slashgear reports the phone is set to bring a depth of less than a centimeter and “Sleeve DNA design” in addition to a sweet Dolby speaker plate on the back.  While this phone has a gorgeous profile– it will be Acer’s first phone to feature AcerCloud technology and of course, Android 4.0. The CloudMobile smartphone will also be the first to utilize Acer’s cloud service which was introduced at CES this year.

Acer certainly is making it clear that they have big plans for 2012 by releasing eye-opening devices. No word yet on when the device will launch or if it will reach the U.S. or not. We do expect to find out more details at MWC, so stay tuned everyone!

Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime Sleeve spied on video

We have spent our share of hands on time with the Transformer Prime and really like the tablet. I am sure we aren’t the only ones looking forward to the tablet hitting the market. A video has surfaced on Facebook that shows off a new accessory for the Transformer Prime that is really interesting. The accessory is the Transformer Prime Sleeve.

The iPad has its smart cover that can turn the iPad 2 on and off when it opens and closes. The new Prime Sleeve for the Asus tablet has an even cooler trick up its sleeve. You can see the sleeve in action on the video below. When the sleeve flap is closed, you can see the lines on the surface where the thing folds.

You can fold it into two shapes with one of the shapes for standing the tablet upright for watching video and such. The other shape props the tablet up at a much lower angle that would be good for typing. It appears that the Sleeve plugs into two of the mount holes for the keyboard add-on. Pricing and availability for the Sleeve is unknown.

Sprint sets the date for a CES ‘exclusive event’

Sprint CES

Time to start the annual CES speculation, and Sprint's first out of the gate with the special events. As the invite notes, this one's immediately after the Tuesday keynote, which happens to be from Intel's Paul Otellini. We really have no idea what Sprint's got up its sleeve here — could well be an Intel-based Windows 8 tablet (which in and of itself would be pretty cool), but remember that Intel's also getting into the Android game in 2012, so perhaps we'll get our first look at that fare? Or it could just be that the event's after the keynote and has absolutely nothing to do with Intel. We'll find out in about a month and a half.

Kindle Fire Accessories from Amazon

Today Amazon has officially unveiled the new Kindle Fire and already we have a flood of comments coming in regarding all sorts of things from price, availability, and accessories. Shipping November 15th for $199 you can pre-order it now, as well as see our hands-on images here. We should see plenty of accessories soon but for now I’ll just show you a few cases.

Over on Amazon.com we have a few cases already showing up, all set to start shipping on launch day — November 15th. First, shown above, is the Kindle Fire Sleeve for just $29.99 and comes in 5 colors. It will hold your Fire snug in place while keeping it protected. The Kindle Fire does come with a 7″ screen protected by Gorilla Glass but the more protection the better right?

Next up is the MicroShell Folio Case and stand for $39.99 also coming November 15th. Specifically designed for the Kindle Fire it features a hard polycarbonate back piece with a soft protective lid for protection against scratches and impact. Then has a soft fabric lid that folds to function as a stand for easy viewing.

Last and most expensive is the CEO Marware Genuine Leather Case for $44.99 and it also features the same foldable lid that also acts and functions as a stand. Only difference here is everything is genuine leather on the Marware, and it also offers two angles for viewing rather than just one.

These are just a few of the already announced and fully designed specifically for the Kindle Fire accessories. We are sure to see tons of screen protectors, cases, sleeves, docks and more over the coming days and weeks but I figured a round-up of the first few awesome cases would be worth a shout out. I think the MicroShell looks best as it features a hard polycarbonate plastic to fully protect my Fire when it arrives — trust me I’ll be getting one, will you?

What could Barnes & Noble have up their sleeve for May 24th? The retailer just sent out invitations to press for an event to be held in NYC, and it would seem a new device is headed to Nook lineup. Speculation is wavering between a beefed up NOOKcolor or a new version of the original Nook with eInk screen. Regardless, with the recent popularity the Nook has gained thanks to its tablet-like properties, we fully expect Android to be present for whatever the announcement is.
