The Best Apps For Your New Android Device
Did you receive an Android device this holiday season? Whether it’s a smartphone or a tablet one thing you should immediately do is get some apps into it. Here are out choices for apps that are a must to have in every Android.
Social
Facebook – More than a billion people are on Facebook today and having this app in your device lets you access your social network while on the go
Google+ – This is Google’s very own social network that I can say has a very fluid and nice looking mobile app. If you aren’t using it yet then it’s time to check it out.
Instagram – Despite the negative publicity received by the company lately due to the changes in its terms of service it was about to make the app is still cool to use. You will be able to apply filters on your photos and share them directly to your social networks.
Snapseed – Just recently acquired by Google, this popular app is a full featured photo editing software. You can also share your photos edited by the app straight to your Google+ account.
Productivity
Evernote – This is one of my favorite apps as it keeps me organized. Anything you save on your PC will be synched to your smartphone and vice versa.
Google Translate – Are you traveling this holiday season? This app helps break the language barrier by translating a sentence you provide it.
Mint – This app allows you to easily keep track of your financial accounts whether it’s a bank, credit, debit or investment account.
Communication
Skype – This is the best VoIP service so far and it’s available on the Android platform. You will be able to call any phone number using your Skype account.
Chrome – The default web browser on Android devices is great but Chrome brings it to the next level. It synchronizes the Chrome account of your desktop to your smartphone or tablet. This makes it easier for you to access your bookmarks.

Labbler: The Social Network for Music Professionals And Fans
So you think we have all the social networks that we need right now? A new social network has just began operations and is currently in open beta Labbler is a new social network that tried to be different by catering to music professionals and fans alike. While you might think that this is another MySpace copycat there’s actually more to it.
What this network aims to accomplish is to connect everyone related to the music industry all in one place. This means that recording artists, producers, fans, dj’s, agents, and others will have one place to go to. In theory this is actually great since music artists can easily connect with agents while fans can easily get updates on their favorite artists. While this can easily be done through other networks such as Facebook or Twitter, Labbler goes a step further by providing users with advanced features.
An artist will be able to easily import his or her tracks to Labbler using either Beatport or Soundcloud. Advanced analytics will be presented to better understand what the audience and potential partner’s wants. In the future features such as invoicing, deal tracking and business ranking will be added. A Supplier’s category will also be added for fans to be able to buy digital content. Other features will also be added in the future depending on the feedback of users.
Since this is a new network what is lacking right now is the number of members. If more artists will be using this network then it will be great for the music industry.
Signing up is easy and all you need is a valid email address. Once you are verified you will immediately see your profile page. On top of the page are categories which separate the feeds coming from Artists, Labels, Clubs, Media, Promoters, Bookings, and Events. This makes it easier for you to determine what kind of posts are being made.
If you love music or are connected with the music industry then try to check out Labbler.

White House Opens Pinterest Account, Hosts Holiday Social
The White House is now on Pinterest, adding another social networking website to its growing list. Already, it has an account on Facebook, MySpace, Google+, Twitter, LinkedIn, Youtube, Vimeo, Flickr, iTunes, Foursquare, Socrata, SlideShare, Storify, Digg, and Github. On Pinterest, the White House has the account name WhiteHouse44.
White House reportedly decided to join Pinterest after the website was recognized as among the most popular social media platforms in the United States this year. The company has experienced a growth of over 1,000% in the US, a 4,225% growth in terms of mobile web users and 1,698% in terms of mobile app users, as per Nielsen’s Social Media Report for the year.
According to the White House’s official blog, the new Pinterest account will be used to “share pins and boards that range from inspiring images and quotes to infographics that help explain key issues to details about the life inside the White House.”
Furthermore, it is said to be another way to make the White House more accessible to Americans. According to First Lady Michelle Obama, the White House is “the “People’s House…It’s a place that is steeped in history, but it’s also a place where everyone should feel welcome. And that’s why my husband and I have made it our mission to open up the house to as many people as we can.”
To mark the presence of the White House on Pinterest, its followers are invited for a Holiday Social at the White House on December 17th.
The attendees of the event will meet the White House staff that is in charge of decorating the place for the holidays, as well as take part in a craft-making session. They will be encouraged to share what they encounter, including the decorations, and the outcome of the craft project, with other Pinterest users.

Review: Humm Together is a Humdinger of a Social Gaming App for Name That Tune Fans
Just when you thought that social networking games had all the bases covered along comes a new one. Forget about spelling out words, forget about drawing pictures, it’s time to get musical. Enter Humm Together – a game that challenges players to hum (or la-de-da or dum-de-dum) tunes for friends and random strangers to guess. Humm Together is a bit like Name That Tune, because that’s exactly what you’re trying to do, and it takes the tried-and-true concept of turn-based social networking games and throws in an unexpected twist.
Basically, Humm Together has essentially the same interface as Draw Something. Players select a song to hum and then have a short amount of time in which to make a recording of themselves recreating the tune. The recording is then sent to the other player for them to guess the song from a multiple-choice list. Players can alternately earn points to “buy” different genres and eras of music as well as sound filters to “enhance” humming. (more…)

Slingshot Action Going Social: Multiplayer freemium iOS game Temple Raid
Independent developer Cynthia Bandara today announces the release and immediate availability of Temple Raid 1.0.1 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. “Peace between the tribes is fading as the Shamans ask for larger and ever more impressive temples to be built for the spirits. Raid gold from other players to level up and purchase better bricks and idols. Build amazing temple structures and store your own gold safely.” This is how the game offers itself on the App Store, and it is supposed to set the scene for a multiplayer experience in which architectural creativity, aiming skills, and perseverance are challenged.
Temple Raid is a casual physics multiplayer game that offers a new hybrid of turn-based and live gameplay. The center of the game, however, is a physics sandbox on a mountain top on which the player constructs a temple from various kinds of bricks that are unlocked with each level. In addition to regular bricks, pots can be placed, and these are necessary to hold nuggets of gold, each of which is simulated to a degree that gold can even be poured from one pot into another (see trailer).

Likes, Retweets, Double Taps and Smiley Faces: The Economy of Social Networks [Off Topic]
Lately I have been trying to be more conscious of the reasons behind why I post something on a social network. As I near 19,000 tweets I am keenly aware that I share my thoughts more than most people. I am certainly not anywhere near having the most tweets, but as I have participated in [...]

Google Play Store Cyber Weekend Sale offering content at 80% off
Who is still full from last night? As you all know, Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals are going strong at the moment, and now we get to enjoy it too. As usual Google is getting in on the action and have officially announced their Cyber Weekend Sale on the Play Store. Google and multiple developers are offering content at up to 80% off this year.

I don’t know about you guys but after seeing a few videos of Walmart Black Friday smartphone sales where people were fighting, I think I’ll stick to Cyber Monday this year. Google isn’t just going for a day, they have deals planned for the entire weekend — although you might have to search to find them all. Obviously multiple developers are having their own sales — like SwiftKey 3 — but you’ll be able to find much more right from the Play Store.
Google’s announced that movies, TV, music, books, apps, and basically everything they offer will be getting sales here and there all weekend long. They’ve already started their “Players Appreciation” best of 2012 Cyber deals as shown above, where tons of popular games are all on the cheap. Google Movies also have some stellar deals going on. You can get entire TV series for just $9.99, and tons of popular and classic movies like Jaws, The Social Network, The Big Lebowski (yes please) all on sale, or own them for $4.99.

Music has a long list of deals too where Google’s offering the top albums of 2012 for just $2.99. Get the entire Gotye CD, fun, and even Justin Bieeeeber all for cheap. For now we’re seeing a few apps here and there on sale but over the weekend many developers will surely be dropping their prices to take part in the holiday cheer. Stay tuned as we’ll report anything worth noting. Have a happy holidays and enjoy the deals!

Facebook launches new job board, features 1.7 million job openings
Facebook has become a threat to Linkedln’s presence in social jobs recruiting after the social network giant launched a new Facebook jobs boards that features 1.7 million jobs opening from five different recruiting entities.
Facebook started last year a Social Jobs Partnership with few public agencies to post jobs opening already available on their pages to a central location for jobseekers to have a comprehensive access to these vacancies.
Recruiting organization BranchOut, DirectEmployers Association, Jobvite, Monster.com, and Work4Labs collectively posted roughly 1.7 million job opening on Facebook job boards.
“Today’s launch of the Social Jobs Application highlights what we’ve known all along — that both recruiters and job seekers benefit when jobs are posted where candidates spend their time, and research overwhelmingly tells us that this is on Facebook,” said Work4Lavs CEO Stephane Le Viet in a press release.
Le Viet believes social media will eventually become the main player in recruitment, giving them more reasons to commit for overall improvement of the Social jobs application on Facebook.
“Undoubtedly, there will be an acceleration of the shift to social media as the primary channel to find a job with the extraordinary push of this consortium. We are fully committed to making the Social Jobs Application on Facebook the best possible resource for connecting candidates and companies,” Le Viet added.
Facebook has not been racking up big money from its new jobs board but their recent move looms a big threat to Linkedln’s presence in the recruitment arena.
According to market analysts, Facebook’s 1 billion users worldwide would be a major factor in its rise to this segment of business. Work4Labs, the San Francisco-based software company that develops Facebook recruitment applications, stated that it posted 2.2 million jobs on the board over the last 18 months mainly because of 50 percent potential employee are also Facebook users.
Rogers Launching An Unlimited Talk Plan
Rogers stores all across Canada are getting ready to put in place some very major changes to how their plans works. Essentially, Rogers is moving towards unlimited texting and calling for most of their plants, and will be differentiating the plans based on the amount of data they offer. Android Central mentions that Rogers will also be getting rid of their My5 and My10 programs. Despite the new plans for Rogers’ customers, things are still looking rather expensive.
Overage charges are going to cost a good $15 per GB for the first three tiers of the plans, and then $10 per GB for the top tier plan:
- $55 (Occasional plan) – 200 MB, 1,000 weekday minutes (this is probably the most expensive plan based off of what it offers)
- $65 (Social plan) – 1 GB, unlimited local calling
- $75 (Streamer plan) – 3 GB, unlimited local calling
- $95 (Connected plan) – 5 GB, unlimited Canada-wide calling
There are a couple of other plans focused on families or simple talk and text, but those are the big changes. Basically for a whopping hundred dollars a month, you are able to get everything. The new plans definitely seems a whole lot more streamlined with less hassle than their previous plans, but then again, there are always those hidden extras like caller ID and voicemail.
Rogers will be making these plans available for the public tomorrow on November 7th. Any of our readers in Canada considering one of these plans? Do you think that it is worth shelling out $100 a month for the Connected plan that offers everything you need along with a few Rogers specific perks (e.g. Anyplace TV). Or, do you think it is much more worth it to get on a carrier with a bit less coverage for half the price? WIND or even Mobilicity possibly? What about Bell and TELUS?
Rogers plans sound great, and I would say are a definite improvement compared to what they were using earlier.

Canadian carrier Rogers set to launch unlimited talk plans starting November 7th
The Canadian wireless carrier Rodgers is planning to overhaul their plans. The plans look great and it seems like they’re focusing on unlimited texting and calling on most of the plans, while differentiating on the data portion. Here’s what you can expect within the new plans:
- $55 (Occasional plan) – 200 MB, 1,000 weekday minutes
- $65 (Social plan) – 1 GB, unlimited local calling
- $75 (Streamer plan) – 3 GB, unlimited local calling
- $95 (Connected plan) – 5 GB, unlimited Canada-wide calling
Rogers plans to unveil these plans and make them available tomorrow November the 7th. Any Rogers customers out there going to gives these a go?

Rogers to launch unlimited talk plans November 7

Rogers stores across Canada are preparing some pretty hefty changes to their plan structure. Basically, Rogers is going all-in with unlimited texting and calling for most of their plans, and differentiating solely on data. Our source says that as part of the changes, Rogers will also be axing their My5 and My10 programs.
In any case, here's a quick tour of what's to come. Overage charges are $15/GB for the first three tiers, $10/GB for the top.
- $55 (Occasional plan) – 200 MB, 1,000 weekday minutes
- $65 (Social plan) – 1 GB, unlimited local calling
- $75 (Streamer plan) – 3 GB, unlimited local calling
- $95 (Connected plan) – 5 GB, unlimited Canada-wide calling
There's a handful of other plans for families or simple talk and text, but those are the big changes. Basically, for a hundred bucks a month, you can get everything. It certainly seems more streamlined and less fussy than previous plans, though there are always the extras like caller ID and voicemail.
We're hearing Rogers will be making these plans public on November 7. Canadians, anyone biting? Is $100/month worth it for all the everything you could need plus a few perks Rogers offers (Anyplace TV, for example), or are you willing to make make a sacrifice on coverage and go with WIND or Mobilicity for half the price? Are Bell and TELUS any more inviting?
Check out the rest of the retail briefing brochure after the jump. Anything leap out at you as particularly interesting?
Thanks tipster!
Facebook Wins Another Round of Legal Battle Against Paul Cegelia
Social Networking site Facebook took another big victory in its legal battle against Paul Ceglia after a New York Federal judge allowed the lawyers of the plaintiff to present forensics reports that would further indict the respondent for the commission of perjury.
Ceglia was taken into custody on fraud charges filed by Facebook last week after asserting that he has 50 percent interest of the social networking giant.
In his 2010 lawsuit, Ceglia claimed that he hired Mark Zuckerberg through a Craigslist advertisement in 2003 to write code for a project called StreetFax.
He allegedly paid $1,000 Zuckerberg for the coding work and then invested $1,000 in the Face Book project, which developed into a billion dollar business.
Ceglia claimed his investment in Zuckerberg’s project allows him to acquire a 50 percent stake in the company.
On Wednesday, U.S. Magistrate Judge Leslie Foschio denied the petition of Ceglia to exclude an expert witness report about the authenticity of some important documents, calling such request a ‘drastic remedy’ inappropriate in the court.
In a report prepared for Facebook by forensic document examiner and handwriting expert Gus Lesnevic, it clearly presented several differences between multiple versions of the purported contract.
Moreover, Lesnevich pinpointed 20 dissimilarities among the four images all discovered on page 1 of the purported contract. The forensic report further stated the typeface had been altered and the slant and slope of the letters were different from the genuine signature of the Facebook CEO.
According to U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, Ceglia intentionally inserted a fake page into a contract signed by him and Zuckerberg to give the appearance that Zuckerberg promised Ceglia half of the company.
In addition, Ceglia allegedly manufactured fake e-mails that showed Zuckerberg making an offer to Ceglia and discussing details about the Face Book project.
Federal investigators already confiscated hard drives owned by Ceglia and discovered the original contract between Zuckerberg and Ceglia does not refer any dealing involving Facebook,” as stated by the Justice Department.

Review: Explore the World’s Social Feed in Multi-POV with Moment.me
Being social is getting harder these days. Between Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, I find myself in a never-ending vicious cycle of checking on friends’ activities. One app that is making it easier to check in on all of that online activity in one place is Moment.me. Now, it’s not a content generator, rather it’s more of a reader of sorts, but an excellent one at that.
The fun of Moment.me is seeing all of the action happening in your feed. At first, you won’t see much there, even though the app looks back at your previous moments, which are your social shares of posts, pics and tweets. Once you start sharing posts and uploading content you’ll notice that the feed will fill up fast. It’s very nicely displayed in a snapshot view that shows the amount of tweets, people talking about it and photos involved. This is the reader portion of the app and it’s executed beautifully. Easy to view and navigate. (more…)

Zynga internal memo confirms layoffs, closures
The days of pulling out your phone and indulging in a moment of Words with Friends or Draw Something might be coming to an end. Earlier today, Zynga workers were greeted with a notice that they had two hours to pack up and get out. Now an internal email by the company’s CEO Mark Pincus confirms that the company plans to cut 5% of its workforce and close the Boston studio.

In addition to closing down the Boston studio, Zynga is also reducing the workforce at its Austin branch, and is considering closing its offices in Japan and the UK. A “small number” of partner teams are also on the chopping block. Thirteen games are to be retired, and The Ville is slated for a significant reduction, according to the email.
Thus far, which 13 games are going to be retired is unknown, although the email did mention that they’re older titles. Zynga is currently being sued by EA over The Ville, which claims that the game is a rip off of The Sims Social. Earlier this year, Zynga’s revenue had dropped enough to garner a $22.8 million loss.
All in all, things are looking pretty dismal for Zynga. The company’s financial woes combined with its continual struggle to monetize mobile gaming seem to have finally caught up with it, with a lot of employees ending up blindsided. CEO Pincus stated in the email, “This is the most painful part of an overall cost reduction plan that also includes significant cuts in spending on data hosting, advertising and outside services, primarily contractors.” The company’s financial report will be released tomorrow.

WhitePages for Android updated with more location awareness

WhitePages for Android has been updated with a whole bunch of location-based features, including finding nearby people that have checked in on Foursquare, viewing nearby businesses, and looking for specific shops nearby. (Edit: Scratch that, the Nearby People feature is powered by WhiePages' own people database.) By plugging into Foursquare, you can also conduct searches for places near your friends where you can meet up. Some restaurants will even list their menu and have it accessible in the app.
As always, WhitePages also provides reverse phone lookup, reverse address lookup, and plain (but useful) people and business search functions. WhitePages also has their Social Caller ID app, though the use case for that is a fair bit more different (even if it's equally free).
It's an uphill battle in the world of mobile local search with Google around, bute WhitePages has been in the business for awhile, and I'm sure they still have at least a few tricks up their sleeve. The new Foursquare plug-in is great and all, but seems like it's largely dependent on if you actually use the social network. Also, isn't it a little creepy that the app can scrape public check-ins and provide a sort of heat map of where the popular places are?
WhitePages 2.0 Released With New Interface, Social, Discovery Functionality
Following up on the success of its Current Caller ID app, WhitePages has released version 2.0 of the WhitePages app, bringing a slick new Android-oriented UI and new social/discovery features along for the ride.
Besides its newly holo-fied interface design, the WhitePages app adds the ability to connect with friends and neighbors with a Nearby People functionality that can be used, as seen in the video, to “find a friend” and plan a lunch. Likewise, you can search for nearby businesses and restaurants, even taking a sneak peek at restaurant menus.
Once you get tired of finding new friends and businesses, you can share where you’re going (or where you’ve been) with friends via various social media outlets, and invite them to come along.

Firefox introduces preliminary support for Social API, brings your networks into the browser
While you might use Firefox to access your social media of choice already, preliminary support for a new API has been introduced that could integrate key features into the browser itself. The aptly named Social API, will allow developers to embed services into the browser directly, letting you interact with friends and stay updated without having to open new windows, or keep hopping into different tabs. There’s no solid info just yet on how this will manifest itself, or how issues such as security and privacy might be addressed, but with testing beginning soon, we’re expecting the curtain to lift on the finer details soon. Interested developers can head to the source, for the other billion, you’ll just have to wait.
