Huawei’s Ascend D2 confirmed by uncovered billboard at CES

Huawei's Ascend D2 confirmed by uncovered billboard at CES

The days preceding CES are like an easter egg hunt, with clues of future products everywhere. Easily revealed near the cabstand line of the Las Vegas Convention Center is a billboard proudly displaying the Huawei Ascend D2 we’ve been expecting. We will have to wait until tomorrow at 1pm ET for the Huawei press event for the official details, though, which we’ll of course be covering live.

Sony Xperia Z spotted early on CES show floor

Sony Xperia Z spotted early on CES show floor

The Sony Xperia Z has seen its fair share of pre-CES leaks, so it comes as no surprise to us that the 5-inch, 1080p smartphone is ready to take the show by storm at tomorrow’s press conference. We’ve been waiting for some real-world evidence of the device’s existence, however, and a tipster provided us with just that: a shot of the Z as it appears in Sony’s booth at the Las Vegas Convention Center. We didn’t receive any specs, but this is as good an indicator of its impending launch as any we’ve seen so far. Regardless, it won’t be too long before we get the full scoop from the horse’s mouth.

HTC One X Receiving Jelly Bean Update On O2 UK

HTC One X

If you’re living in the United Kingdom and own one of HTC’s One X’s on O2′s network, you have a tasty treat awaiting you, as the device is now receiving the Jelly Bean update. This has been confirmed by HTC UK on their Twitter account. As usual, the update is being pushed out in batches, so if you don’t have it just yet, don’t worry, as it shouldn’t be too long of a wait! As is standard, to check if you’ve gotten the update head on over to Settings > About > Software Updates > Check Now. If you have access to it a notification will pop up.

Before downloading the update, you may want to connected to Wi-Fi network as the update is a massive 365MB in size. As you might have seen already, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean brings awesome features like Google Now and Project Butter to increase performance. Additionally, the update also brings the One X to the latest version of HTC’s Sense software, which is commonly known as Sense+.

Now One X users in the United Kingdom can finally relax for a moment now that they have Jelly Bean. Surely One X users in the UK will be in anticipation again tomorrow though, as there will no doubt be hopes of an update to Android 4.2 in the near future.

Are you one of the lucky users who were able to get the update? Let us know how you’re liking the sticky goodness of Jelly Bean in the comments section below!

Don’t forget to sign up for Droid World in San Francisco this February

With CES looming (our team is headed out to Vegas as early as tomorrow!) it’s hard to realize that anything will be going on afterward, but don’t forget that February will yield a lot of great events. One of those events is Droid World, a natural extension of Apps World where developers will converge to speak about the exciting and challenging world of mobile application development for Android.

The event will feature a lot of key speakers and panelists, and a few new folks have been added to the list of those you’ll want to lend an ear to once they take the stage at the Moscone Center starting February 7th. Folks like Tom Chavez, a NOOK Developer Evangelist for Barnes & Noble, will be on hand, as well as Android Developers Cookbook author Jim Steele, Comcast’s Eric Schrag and more.

Everything will be discussed, from the business aspects of application development right down to the nitty, gritty manipulation of code itself. There will be two days of workshops which will be free to attend for anyone interested, so if you can make your way to San Francisco and are interested in development for the biggest mobile platform there is, then there’s no reason you should miss it. Be sure to head to the Droid World site for more information and to register for what is sure to be a great time in Silicon Valley.

Motorola says Jelly Bean coming to all Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX users in Q1 2013

After a select group of Motorola Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX users received a Christmas gift in the form of Android 4.1.2, the update ceased without explanation. We can’t say for sure why Motorola halted the software upgrade, but we now have confirmation that Motorola plans to deliver Jelly Bean to all users of the RAZR and RAZR MAXX sometime in Q1 of this year.

The news was posted to the comments section of a post touting Jelly Bean for the Droid RAZR M on the Motorola Facebook page. No specifics were offered as to when exactly in Q1 we can expect to see the Android 4.1 update begin anew. We’re in Q1 now, so Jelly Bean could touch down as soon as tomorrow or as late as March. Let’s hope the latter isn’t the case.

If a major bug was discovered at the last minute, it could be a while before we see the update reach handsets. On the other hand, if the software only needed a few minor tweaks expect it much sooner.

ANDRU Giveaway: start the year with the best USB charger!

It is officially 2013 and we are ready to start a fresh year! We can’t have a great year without a good charge on our Android devices, though. This is why we have teamed up with the guys from GEN to give away an ANDRU charger to 5 lucky Phandroid readers!

The ANDRU charger is honestly our favorite USB charger ever. As you have seen in our hands-on review, these are not only the cutest, but they are very well built. Sure, they go for $25, but we believe these to be worth every penny if you want to charge your device with style.

ANDRU chargers are available in 3 versions: ANDRU (green), ANDRU Dark (black) and ANDRU Chill (white). Their eyes light up in different colors (standby/charging) and the colors differ depending on the version you have. They have moveable arms, and a nice dock, so they also double as Andy figurines!

Let’s cover the rules first. You must have a Twitter account, be at least 18 years old and live in the US (and its territories). That’s it! If you fit the requirements go ahead and enter to win one of these little guys.

How do I enter?

It is easy to participate! Just follow these steps:

  • Follow @Phandroid and @AndruTheRobot on Twitter.
  • Leave a comment below. Include your twitter handle and let us know why you want an ANDRU charger.

That’s it! The contest will be open until tonight (Jan 1, 2013) at 11:59 PM. We will select the winners randomly and announce them tomorrow (January 2nd). Good luck! If you don’t win, you can always buy them at powerbygen.com or Amazon.

Android Community Weekly: End of 2012 Edition

Welcome to the latest round of the Android Community Weekly. The last edition ever… in 2012. This was an amazing year for the Android world at large, the Android community, and us here at Android Community. We’ll be bringing plenty of stories wrapping up the year tomorrow, but for now lets rundown everything that happened this holiday weekend in the news.

acweekly

We want to start by thanking everyone that made this year awesome, and possible. From the manufacturers, the PR companies, the wireless carriers, and of course you — the readers! Then by saying Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year — Ya filthy animal (name the movie). We hope everyone has a wonderful and safe New Years Eve. Now lets talk Android. This week was exciting for many Motorola owners, gamers, and Samsung Galaxy Note users. We’ll start with the OUYA, their developer kit game console shipped this week, and we’re expecting great things from OUYA in 2013.

ouya_dev-580x382-540x355

Motorola and Verizon issued the update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for their highly popular original DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX, which made tons of people happy, and reports surfaced of a RAZR M HD for early next year. That was an awesome budget phone and a 4.5-inch variant would be a hot seller. Speaking of the M, we reviewed the Motorola Electrify M for US Cellular, so check that out by clicking here.

Samsung as usual had a fun week. We’ll try to keep their news to a minimum since it comes in bunches, but we saw some interesting Galaxy S IV stuff — albeit fake. A concept video based off of early design drafts was leaked, and looks rather interesting for the 4.99-inch 1080p quad-core superphone. We can’t wait to see it next year around March or April. Then Samsung confirmed the original Galaxy Note will receive Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and multi-window updates soon.

Speed round. Google Music received music scan and match features, but was cutting out explicit songs and naughty words, and here’s a fix for that. Hyundai wants to replace our car keys with NFC smartphones, and an impressive new 3rd party keyboard called the Kii Keyboard was released — and is rather nice. Last but not least Huawei’s 6.1-inch 1080p Ascend Mate leaked a few times, and we’ll be seeing more of that flagship next week for CES.

Have a Happy New Year!!! Then stay tuned because starting next Sunday CES 2013 will be in full stride with plenty of Android news.

Llama Updated With Jelly Bean Support, Holo Inspired UI, Event Sharing, And More [Update: Llama Temporarily Pulled From The Play Store]

unnamed (1)

Update: It looks like KebabApps has pulled Llama from the Play Store while the developer sorts out “a pain-in-the-butt problem involving silent mode,” in which the app can – for some users – switch what should be silent mode to vibrate mode. KebabApps, in a blog post, provides more information on the issue, along with a (hopefully) fixed download, which users are encouraged to test, and which will be uploaded to the Play Store “tomorrow morning.”

Llama, an extremely popular location-based profiling app, was issued an “über üpdate” today, bringing a handful of big changes from a new UI to bug fixes.

OUYA Developer kits shipping today, could arrive tomorrow

The highly anticipated open-source game console OUYA developer kits are shipping sooner than expected, and today we’ve learned some lucky developers could be receiving theirs as soon as tomorrow. According to our good pals at SlashGear instead of the developer consoles shipping tomorrow, they’ve already sent many out and they’ll be arriving all weekend long.

ouya_console-580x4131

OUYA originally stated tomorrow, December 28th, they’d start shipping kits to developers who pre-ordered. Now however according to the OUYA forums some are actually receiving their units tomorrow, and all who pre-ordered will have their own Tegra 3 powered OUYA in hand before January 10th. What a perfect way to start the weekend and enter into 2013. Right?

OUYA was one of the most successful kickstarter campaigns of 2012, with more than 8.5 million in funding from excited backers. For those lucky developers that have one coming soon I’m sure all the early backers are eagerly awaiting their unit to arrive tomorrow, Saturday, or sometime early next week.

The official OUYA developer SDK is expected to be released tomorrow, which will be right on time for those who receive their console tomorrow as well. We are expecting tons of high profile games for the Android-powered Tegra 3 quad-core gaming console. Final Fantasy III will be launched, and earlier this month we detailed 10 new games coming soon. Expect some goodness from the OUYA, and let us know when yours arrives!

OUYA development consoles begin shipping today

To get the ball rolling on bringing great content for OUYA users, OUYA has started shipping development consoles to those who were in line for one. A thread was made at an OUYA fansite by a forum admin for people to report to once they have gotten their shipping email or have received the actual units.

One user has already reported a shipping email, and their console is expected to arrive sometime between December 30th and January 10th. We’re hearing that some might get lucky and start receiving the console as early as December 28th, but there’s been no confirmation as to whether or not that’ll actually happen. We will know by tomorrow, though, so just keep an eye on your inbox and your doorstep in the meantime.

The OUYA team recently announced several more titles and new partnerships with developers to help fill out the launch roster. Since OUYA will be based on Android 4.1 and higher there isn’t much legwork to be done to get these games up and running on the cubed console, but developers still have some work to do.

For starters, they have to make sure their code is optimized for the OUYA’s Tegra 3 chipset, make sure full controller support is achieved and get other various assets and have their loose ends tied up to make sure their games are sitting pretty in OUYA’s store.

More exciting than the games will be the open nature of OUYA. Since the hardware and software will invite tinkering and third-party development there’s a lot more to look forward to than just games.

We’ll have to wait and see what the development community ends up doing with the box, but we imagine that the times ahead are very exciting. If you’re a developer expecting a console shipment be sure to let us know when your estimated delivery date is, and don’t forget to discuss the OUYA and everything Android gaming over at AndroidForums.com.

Greetings,

We shipped your OUYA Developer Kit!

This is exciting news, so we thought we’d share it with you.

AT&T’s Samsung Galaxy Note 2 to receive multi-window update tomorrow

Do you own a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 from AT&T and have been patiently waiting for the multi-window update? Now you just have to wait one more day as AT&T plans on releasing the update on December 27th (tomorrow). Here’s AT&T’s official statement regarding the update:

AT&T plans to begin rolling out a software update for Samsung Galaxy Note II customers that includes the Multi-Window feature, which allows the user to divide the screen into two active “windows” creating a split screen that enables fluid multitasking between applications. The update will be available for download over the air beginning Dec. 27.

The multi-window functionality has been popular for Samsung’s devices and I’m sure it won’t disappoint you! Once you have the update let us know how it goes!

Galaxy Note 2 on AT&T receiving multi-window update tomorrow

Galaxy Note 2

AT&T has confirmed to Engadget that starting tomorrow, Galaxy Note 2 users on its network will be receiving an update that will bring full multi-window functionality to their devices. AT&T is the last of the big carriers in the U.S. to roll out an update with the feature to Note 2 devices, something that many specifically want the device for. The multi-window feature, if you're not familiar, lets users run two apps side-by-side which can definitely offer increased productivity options if you're trying to get a lot done. With the extra screen real estate of the Note 2, it's something that can actually work for some people.

Luckily for us, AT&T is skipping the hassle of using Kies for the update (unlike the latest for the Galaxy S3) and letting this one go out OTA (Over The Air,) just like it should. We're not sure exactly when the update will begin rolling, but you can bet the folks here in our forums will know as soon as it does.

AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 2 receiving Multi-Window update starting tomorrow

This image has no alt text

Good news for those of you looking to do some serious multitasking on the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 for AT&T. After rolling out last week for T-Mobile, it looks like AT&T users can finally get in on the fun with the #2 largest wireless provider in the US announcing plans to begin rolling out the Multi-Window update to users starting tomorrow. AT&T’s official statement to Engadget reads:

AT&T plans to begin rolling out a software update for Samsung Galaxy Note II customers that includes the Multi-Window feature, which allows the user to divide the screen into two active “windows” creating a split screen that enables fluid multitasking between applications. The update will be available for download over the air beginning Dec. 27.

This is the same update the rest of the globe has been enjoying for a few weeks now and dramatically enhances the multitasking capabilities of the device. Now when can we expect the same for the Samsung Galaxy S3? (Bats eyelashes).

AT&T to update Samsung Galaxy Note II with Multi-Window tomorrow

AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

Most US models of the Samsung Galaxy Note II have already been updated with Multi-Window — a split-screen feature that allows users to view two apps at once — but AT&T is the last of the four national powers that hasn’t pushed the feature out to its customers. That will change tomorrow, as AT&T has confirmed to us in an email that it will roll out the new build over the air at some point during the day. We’re happy that users won’t have to rely on Samsung’s proprietary Kies desktop software to update their devices, but minor downloads like this are typically facilitated OTA. There’s no word on if the ROM will be pushed out in phases to minimalize the impact on AT&T’s servers, but don’t be terribly worried if you don’t get notified right away. Continue below to read the carrier’s official statement on the matter.

The Nexus 7 contest picks back up Friday

Nexus 7

Our Nexus 7-a-day contest didn't end prematurely, it just got pushed back a day. You may have noticed some technical issues here at the site. We're doing some work with the servers and a few folks haven't been able to get to Android Central. We didn't think it was fair to have a contest for something as awesome as a Nexus 7 when folks couldn't get in to enter. Growing pains — they happen when a website gets bigger then anyone imagined as fast as we have. It's all fixed up and should be sorting itself out as we speak. Erm, type.

The contest will pick back up tomorrow (bar any new and unforeseen circumstances), finish on Saturday, and we'll announce all the winners on Sunday. Keep an eye out for it.

Also, while I have your attention, Don't forget to enter the Mobile Nations CES Experience contest that's been running all week. It ends Friday at 11:59PM eastern time, and a trip to Vegas for CES is on the line. That's one you don't want to miss. And starting next week our Stocking Stuffer gift card giveaways fire back up, and a new photo contest is coming.

Just wanted to drop everyone a line and let you all know what's up.

T-Mobile launches 10-day “$0 down” sale to close out the year

T-Mobile’s looking to get some more sales in its book to close out the end of the year (and, possibly, the world) with a new sale it’s administering starting tomorrow and lasting for the rest of the year. This “$0 down” sale will let you get some great devices under T-Mobile’s value plan program, and includes some heavy hitting devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S3, the HTC One S, the Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G, and even LG’s Nexus 4.

Yes, that’s right — the Nexus 4. As ironic as that is considering Google’s difficulty in getting stock for the Google Play Store it’s an option that you have to consider if you can’t wait for LG to gets its supply problem under control. Keep in mind that you’ll still have to pay something up-front when you head into a T-Mobile store these last 1.5 weeks .

You’ll have to wait for mail-in rebates to take effect before you get to the down payment prices shown in the charts below. Beyond that, the typical $20 monthly installments don’t get any cheaper than they usually are so the net down payment is the only thing you’re really saving on here. That doesn’t mean this isn’t a great deal, though, so be sure to see if your local stores have any of these devices in stock starting tomorrow if you’re interested.

T-Mobile also has a couple of other devices on sale that won’t exactly have free net down payments, but will still be quite cheap compared to their usual prices. The Samsung Galaxy Note 2, for instance, can be had for a net down payment of $100, as well as Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. These prices are in effect until the last day of the year so be sure to act fast — remember, the world might not even be here after tomorrow!

Best Buy offering Samsung Galaxy S3 for $49 for one day only on Sunday Dec. 16

Android Central

If you fancy a little pre-holiday treat for yourself, Best Buy might have something for you. For one day only tomorrow, Sunday Dec. 16, the retailer is dropping the price of the Samsung Galaxy S3 to just $49 on a new 2-year contract. It's not the first time in recent months that the Android Central International and U.S. Best of the Best pick has been reduced. The difference this time round is that the Galaxy S3 will be available for that same price on the four big carriers. If you've been holding off, there might be little better opportunities to pick one up on the carrier of your choosing.

Tomorrow only, Best Buy will be offering the famed Galaxy S III for only $49.99 with a new or renewed contract. This offer is good for all four major carriers: Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. You’ll be able to pick up your shiny new Galaxy S III in any Best Buy or Best Buy Mobile store. This is a great deal for any of you looking to own one of the best Android phones around without breaking the bank. You might want to get to Best Buy early tomorrow, with a deal like this they might sell out as quickly as Google’s Nexus 4 did.  Anyone planning on picking one of these up tomorrow?

Samsung Galaxy S III Available For $49 At Best Buy Tomorrow

Samsung Galaxy S III 64GB

As you know, Best Buy has been rocking some fantastic deals, with one of the most recent ones being $50 off an iPhone 4S or an iPhone 5. This deal should make a lot of Android fans excited though. Tomorrow only (Sunday, December 16th), Best Buy will be offering up the extremely popular Samsung Galaxy S III at any Best Buy or Best Buy Mobile location. Keep in mind that if you were to get this device off of AT&T or Verizon, it would normally cost you a  good $199.

This is a fantastic deal for those of you that want to get into a new two-year pact with a carrier of your choice. Albeit, you may want to hold out for the Samsung Galaxy S IV when it releases sometime next year (hopefully). Regardless, you may want to hit Best Buy very early tomorrow. Keep in mind that this is an extremely popular device that has sold over 20+ million units. Best Buy is likely to run out of stock as fast as the Nexus 4 did on its launch.

If this deal wasn’t enough to spark your interest, you may just want to check out some of the new features coming to this device with the Premium Suite that Samsung will be releasing sometime in the future (hopefully soon!). It essentially brings a lot of features from the Galaxy Note 2 to the Galaxy S III.

Is anyone planning on grabbing a Nexus 4 tomorrow, or do you think you can hold out until next year for the Galaxy S IV? Let us know in the comments section below
